Against Quincy on Sunday, in Illinois’ second exhibition game, freshman D.J. Richardson scored 23 points and pushed the Illini out of a funk they’d been in all game. Not since Demetri McCamey against Indiana in the “Eric Gordon Game” have I seen a freshman put the team on his back and separate them from the opposition.

The Illinois men's basketball roster is chock-full of highly touted, proficiently scoring, ultra-talented guards this season. But of the five — juniors Demetri McCamey and Alex Legion and freshmen D.J. Richardson, Joseph Bertrand and Brandon Paul — only one is this team's true X-factor.
