The point of the NCAA Tournament, as I understand it, is to determine the best team in college basketball. I’m far from a NCAA committee member, but I am logical in this thought: To be the best, you have to beat the best. In no way am I saying they’re the best, but our Illini have beaten many of the best.

INDIANAPOLIS -- For a while there, it seemed Illinois was the kid standing against the loser wall at the high school prom, dreading each oncoming girl. Maybe Illinois didn’t know how, maybe it was self-conscious, maybe it would crumble under the pressure.

I remember the night I realized Demetri McCamey was going to be a star.

It was Feb. 7, 2008. A top-15 Big Ten team was visiting Champaign to play a bad Illinois squad. It was the most electric Assembly Hall atmosphere I’d been a part of (until the Michigan State victory this year).

Illinois 78, Purdue 84, game over

Can't say they didn't fight.

10:20 P.M. - McCamey then hits a three from Savoy, and the Boiler lead is three. 18.3 seconds to go. My little heart can't take this much longer.

10:18 P.M. - McCamey hits two more free throws. Strangely, bonehead says nothing. Illini cut the lead to four with 29.2 to go.

Every entity, at one time or another, deals with adversity. Dinosaurs buckled to extinction. Polar ice caps melted. People get stabbed in the back by ones they love. The Na’vi watched The Hometree get blown to bits.
