LeShoure, Thomas among bright spots for Illini football in a dreary season

After a grueling eight-week stretch that saw them go 2-6, head coach Ron Zook and the Illini are getting a much deserved weekend off. But I’m not sure this will make the rest of the season any easier with Cincinnati and Fresno State looming as the team’s final two opponents.

Freshmen offer hope for future

So, the bottom line is that Charest and Hawthorne are the real deal. In fact, it’s safe to say the pair are freshmen in name only, as Saturday they both played like seasoned veterans. Charest demonstrated composure and moxie after being thrown into the game somewhat unexpectedly, while Hawthorne has been the defense’s top guy two weeks in a row.

All the other storylines for Illini football this weekend

So I'll just come right out and say it — this Saturday's game against Illinois State is a gimme.
It is unquestionably the easiest matchup on Illinois' brutal schedule. Anything less than a 40-point margin of victory should be viewed as a moral loss.
