Different Perspectives

The state of Illinois is trying really hard to scare off an entire generation of young adults. With every passing month, it makes my decision to flee this state after graduation even easier. If a brain drain is what Illinois wants, we’ll be more than happy to oblige.

I think I can safely say that three of my favorite things are modern art, listening to ‘90s grunge and politics. Though it’s hard for me to imagine, I can understand “not really caring for modern art.” But I can’t, however, understand “not really caring for politics.” Though you can easily dodge out of museums or press “next” when you hear a screeching Bush song, you really can’t escape politics.

For most college students, eating right is a daily struggle. There are just too many tests, too many shifts at work, too much free pizza and for a lot of students, not enough money to buy the good stuff. It’s a truth of the American grocery store: Healthful food costs more. As unfair as it is, I can buy a lot more Ding Dongs for my money than I can chicken breasts and vegetables, even at lower-priced stores like Wal-Mart.

A stark reality faces the University. Illinois is woefully behind on paying the universities nested within this state, almost $750 million to the different University of Illinois campuses alone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the money will come any time soon.

The University will buy the Internet services and then offer them up to these people and community organizations at this rate. But, we are still assuming that people in these low-income neighborhoods will have enough extra cash to fund this expenditure. If this project is only targeting low-income neighborhoods, as it is, I don’t know how they can expect these families to give up nearly $20 a month for just Internet.

University police have said that it is “senseless” to increase police patrols on campus at this point. But what other kind of solution would be sensible? Though street surveillance technology and new patrol units are apparently in the works, in the meantime, the list of victims will grow even longer.

Whether you have had a summer internship lined up for months or you’ve just begun to embark on the application process, as college students, we all are striving to find ways into our chosen fields and aspiring to stick out. Companies sort through hundreds of applications and, unless we have something unique, it is very easy to get lost in the pile.

Clinical depression is a serious disease. In order to overcome it, one should find help. Everyone has failings and when put out in the open, we can overcome them together. One should not be ashamed of their problems; such a feeling only engenders victimization.

We all have those moments when we feel like the suckiest person on the planet, and we want to run and hide. Sometimes, these drops in our self-esteem can be caused by a bad grade in a class, a general feeling that the world hates us or a bad hair day.
