A stark reality faces the University. Illinois is woefully behind on paying the universities nested within this state, almost $750 million to the different University of Illinois campuses alone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the money will come any time soon.

Whether you have had a summer internship lined up for months or you’ve just begun to embark on the application process, as college students, we all are striving to find ways into our chosen fields and aspiring to stick out. Companies sort through hundreds of applications and, unless we have something unique, it is very easy to get lost in the pile.

Ask ten students why they attend college, and one might hear a hundred different responses: for the parties, for the freedom away from parents, for the chance to wear the orange and blue, and maybe, whispered quietly after all the other reasons have been given, for an education.

Someone will have to pay for these short-term savings. The payment is coming in the short-term from parents who have to spend even more on childcare, from money that many of them don’t have. In the long-term, the students will have to deal with the effects of not only less hours learning, but also overworked and underpaid teachers.

America is behind academically, but there are different views on how to fix it. The proposed solution is longer hours, but a better solution may be a better quality of teaching.

I have noticed that it has recently become quite fashionable for self-righteous commentators to trash our generation, the 'millennial' generation. We're ignorant, we're self-absorbed, we're materialistic, we're apathetic.
