    Convergent Perspectives through the Lens of David Nolan

    The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, David M. Nolan has lived in Danville, Illinois for most of his life, and since 1977 he has used his camera to creatively document the diverse social, musical, and natural landscapes of Central Illinois. Building on his early studies with Orville Stokes and interest in the Depression-era photographic work of Walker Evans, Nolan’s photographs utilize a variety of hand tinting, motion blurring, bracketing, and extended- and multiple-exposure techniques to create visual images that often transcend the literal content of his camera’s subjects. This exhibition documents some of the recognized and not so recognized African-American musicians who frequented Champaign-Urbana’s blues music scene during the 1980s and 1990s such as Ronnie Baker Brooks, Pine Top Perkins, and Big Daddy Kinsey. In addition there will be many beautiful photographs highlighting several of Nolan’s creative darkroom visual experimentations as both social commentary and visual sculpture. For furt
