When Steve Raquel donned his headdress to portray Chief Illiniwek in the fall of 1992, Chief merchandise was readily available in stores across the campus and state. The iconic symbol adorned everything from sweatshirts and baseball caps to pennants and water bottles.

The University Police Department will be seeing a new face on the staff if the appointment for Chief of Police and executive director of the Division of Public Safety is approved by the Board of Trustees at their Nov. 13 meeting.

If the appointment of Barbara O'Connor is approved, then she will begin her job as University Police Chief in January 2009.

A new chief of police was named for the University Police Department on Wednesday.

According to the police department, pending the University Board of Trustees' approval, Barbara O'Connor,, will permanently fill the vacancy Oliver Clark left in 2005 when he retired.

Chief Illiniwek has not performed since Feb. 21, 2007, but Monday, the Council of Chiefs announced a new person to fill the role of the 37th Chief Illiniwek.

The council held tryouts Sunday in Gibson City to choose the next chief and assistant chief. A group of three former chiefs chose Logan Ponce, junior in Engineering, as the 37th Chief Illiniwek and Rob Zaldivar, sophomore in LAS, as assistant chief.

One year ago today, Chief Illiniwek danced for the last time. Since that day, several questions have arisen as to whether getting rid of the Chief has changed anything. So where does the University stand one year later?

An emergency medical call placed at approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning drew emergency response vehicles to the Illinois Street Residence Halls, 1010 W. Illinois St.

"It was for a patient that was asleep on the bus and had fallen," said Tony Foster, division chief of the Urbana Fire Department.

In the dark of night, the Board killed the Chief - or so they think.

Regardless of whether people are pro-Chief or anti-Chief or, like me, ambivalent-Chief, the devious manner in which the board murdered the maligned but adored symbol of the University should foster a sense of unease and suspicion.

One week ago, Dan Maloney was an anonymous name, but not face, in Champaign's sea of students. He went to class, worked out, grabbed lunch with his girlfriend, and no one seemed to notice. His full color photograph appeared in print across the front of the News-Gazette, video of him aired on Champaign and Chicago newscasts, but never was his image accompanied by his name - only his notorious pseudonym.

Chief Illiniwek takes a deep breath, waiting for the band. He stands in an empty hall outside Huff gym, arms crossed over his chest, feathers trailing down his back. He lightly taps his bare feet in the double step he has danced for 80 years, as inside the gym orange-clad students line his path to center court.

The NCAA recently chose to ban schools bearing controversial American Indian imagery, such as our own Chief Illiniwek, from hosting postseason athletic games. The decision has reignited a 20-year-old controversy that is now a campus tradition as unavoidable as Illiniwek himself.

Fund-raising calendars featuring the Chief sat beside Chief Illiniwek Coca-Cola longneck bottles; bumper stickers were stacked on tables next to DVDs. The tables were sprinkled with orange and blue stars.
The Honor the Chief society hosted a dinner reception last night to recognize the years of dedication put forth by University Chiefs and faculty supporting the symbol.
