An attempt by the California Legislature to impose what is believed to be the nation’s most far-reaching smoking ban in state parks stalled Thursday over objections it would inappropriately punish smokers.

The Illinois softball team took their team mentality to the Stanford Nike Invitational over the weekend, where they continued on their hot streak by winning four of their five games. The lone loss on the season came against No. 11 Stanford, which shut out Illinois, 8-0.

That confidence came during the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic last weekend when the Illini outscored their five opponents by a combined score of 43-6 while posting three shutouts.

Governor Pat Quinn and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin kicked off a series of announcements in Chicago today to discuss details about Illinois’ $1.2 billion federal award to bring high-speed passenger rail service to Illinois by 2014. High-speed rail projects in California, Florida and Illinois are among the big winners of $8 billion in grants announced by the White House.

The Chicago Bulls acquired center Brad Miller and John Salmons from the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday in exchange for four players, including forwards Drew Gooden and Andres Nocioni.

Sacramento also got Michael Ruffin and Cedric Simmons in the deal, but immediately traded Ruffin to the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Ike Diogu and cash.
