Over the last few decades, a veteran music act's best shot at platinum magic usually consisted of pairing up with younger hitmakers (a la Santana) or covering treasured classics (like Rod Stewart). These days, another kind of vehicle has become a path to best-selling success - teaming up with box store chains.

This comment is directed to Stephen Barany, the artist of the editorial cartoon published February 10, 2009. I will assume my analysis is correct in that the artist portrays Wal-Mart in a negative light (otherwise, this letter would be utterly foolish).

With its ironic smiley face, Wal-Mart is the conqueror of corporations who wish to oppose it.

NEW YORK - Shoppers passed by the jewelry counter in January, delayed buying their favorite perfume and even skimped on buying clothes for their growing kids. If they looked at status handbags, they put them back on the shelf and walked away. The dismal January sales that retailers reported Thursday foreshadow a cold spring as consumers worry about massive layoffs and their dwindling retirement funds.

Wal-Mart customers expecting to find certain garden products in their usual location at the Champaign store might have to look again.

Consumers may be suffering because of the state of the economy, but for Wal-Mart locally and nationally, the recent slump has had little effect.

According to a company letter sent by Tom Schoewe, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Wal-Mart, the company reported sales of $106 billion for the most recent quarter, making it the first retailer to have sales exceed $100 billion.

A new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Romeoville, Ill. is one of the company's new generation of energy efficient stores being opened nationwide. This store is part of Wal-Mart's commitment to issues of sustainability and the environment.

The Romeoville store opened Jan. 23 after four to five years of planning, said Luis Elvir, store co-manager.

"It is part of our corporate initiative to become more environmentally friendly," he said. "It's really an ongoing process."

Two weeks ago, Chicago's Mayor Daley vetoed Chicago's Big Box Ordinance. This ordinance would have required "big box" stores such as Wal-Mart and Target to pay workers a minimum of $10/hr with additional benefits of $3 per hour by the year 2010. The bill would have effected stores with more than 90,000 square feet of floor space and stores owned by companies that have $1 billion in sales annually.

Fashion lines from well-known designers don't normally fly off the runway and land in your local Target store. And your normal quick stop at Wal-Mart for some groceries doesn't normally send you home with a trendy, fashionable outfit.

But times are changing, and many renowned fashion designers are designing new, low-cost lines to fill the aisles of these local stores, and they seem to be gaining popularity.

I feel the column by Renee Thessing on Feb. 1 had some very misleading evidence used to fight against the opening of the new Wal-Mart. She wrote that Wal-Mart discriminates against women because only 33 percent of the management employed there are women. One piece of information that was left out was that according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, only 35 percent of all management positions nationwide are held by women.

(U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa - Men and women fell over each other. Children ran screaming. Professionals and analysts looked on, both worried and excited. When the dust cleared, it was uncertain how much damage had been done.

It seems that when it comes to Wal-Mart, everyone is an expert. Everyone I know has shopped there and has regretted doing so. We all have our opinions on Wal-Mart, and if you can't tell, mine are negative. However, I will try my hardest to stay as objective as possible during my analyses on why people dislike Wal-Mart.

Those bothered by Wal-Mart's immense size should reflect that, while having a large concentration of market power in the retail sector isn't an ideal situation for the consumer, it is a better situation than the alternative: having a large concentration of market power in the manufacturing sector.

I don't think that we should merely disregard Wal-Mart's business practices for the sake of convenience as Denny Gibbons suggested. That is the reaction Wal-Mart is depending on. Wal-Mart has muscle.

Companies will lose money by breaking ties with them, and we'll have to pay a little more if we shop somewhere else.

Well, I suppose it was inevitable for someone to write the token anti-Wal-Mart opinion column, and on Wednesday, Eric Naing did exactly that. Not only has this become an incredible clich‚, but the argument that Wal-Mart is an evil, faceless corporation that is crushing the heart of the free market economy begins to wear thin quickly.
