For many students, the concept of choosing what to do with the rest of their lives is more than a daunting task, despite the fact that they've already begun college classes at the University. In the past month, Illinois residents have experienced the highs and lows in politics, having proudly watched the inauguration of President Barack Obama and witnessed former Gov. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Gov. Rod Blagojevich was convicted at his impeachment trial and thrown out of office Thursday, ending a nearly two-month crisis that erupted with his arrest on charges that he tried to sell President Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.

Blagojevich becomes the first U.S. governor in more than 20 years to be removed by impeachment.

When he left his family in India, Pravin Vatt told his parents he would be back from America in two years.

That was in 2001. Seven years later, Vatt is still living in the States.

Vatt went to the University of South Carolina on a student scholarship for engineering.

Vice Provost Ruth Watkins is set to serve as the next dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Her assignment was approved Thursday by the University Board of Trustees at their meeting in Springfield.

Watkins will succeed Sarah Mangelsdorf, who left the University in August to serve as the dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University.

NEW YORK - Michael Crichton, the million-selling author who made scientific research terrifying and irresistible in such thrillers as "Jurassic Park," "Timeline" and "The Andromeda Strain," has died of cancer, his family said.

Crichton died Tuesday in Los Angeles at age 66 after privately battling cancer.

Though I was always told I could be anything when I grew up, the Presidency seemed outside the realm of possibilities. For one thing, I have the personal warmth of a brown recluse spider. Also, nobody believes in me. Zero political connections. Bad hair.

One thing that isn't holding me back is my college GPA.

For the past eight years, Embrey has been a pathological assistant at Carle Clinic Association in Urbana.

When John Everson attended the University of Illinois, he was an average student. He worked at The Daily Illini, took English and journalism classes, and wrote short stories.

When a professor used Stephen King as a derogatory comparison for one of his stories, Everson was excited.

In a professor's office, the diplomas on the wall all look about the same - fancy writing, big words; but not Christie Lynn Gilson's diploma.

With three diplomas on her wall, the University certificate she received in May is the first one she can actually read.

Gilson, a blind alumna, earned her Ph.D. in special education and is now an associate professor in the education department at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.

Her diploma is printed in Braille.

On Wednesday, Illinois' Jessica Galli took home the gold medal in the women's 400m dash (T53 Classification) at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. Galli, a 2006 Illinois graduate and now a graduate student working towards a degree in health policy and administration, set a new world record in the race with a time of 54.

These recently hired faculty members have come straight from doctoral work, teaching and research positions at other universities or from other jobs.
