Exorcist shares past experiences with demonic possession

With Halloween around the corner and Hollywood releasing horror movies such as "Paranormal Activity" and "Saw VI," one cannot help but feel chills running down his or her spine. St. John's Catholic Newman Center had the timing right when it invited exorcist Father Vince Lampert to speak about his experiences Monday night at Foellinger Auditorium.
Lampert, the head priest at St. Francis and Clare parish in Greenwood, Ind., was ordained a priest in 1991. He was later asked by the archbishop of Indianapolis if he was willing to train as an exorcist, said Monsignor Gregory Ketcham, director and head chaplain at the Newman Center.
"Father Lampert was asked to take on the role of an exorcist because he is very prayerful and faithful, and he has a lot of integrity — he's a good man," Ketcham said.
Lampert is one of twelve exorcists in America today, Ketcham said. Lampert spent a whole summer in Rome training under Italy's head exorcist. This training included witnessing and assisting in about 60 exorcisms.
Now that Lampert has been a fully trained exorcist for several years, he said he receives five to six calls a week from people who believe they are possessed. Exorcisms are only performed as a last resort once the subject is determined to be truly possessed.
"For one to become possessed by the devil, one has to have a dedication to the devil, be cursed or lead a life that is full of sin; it is something more than just a struggle against temptation," Lampert said.
Performing an exorcism takes a lot of preparation by not only the subject, but by the exorcist too, Lampert said. Before each exorcism, Lampert has to go through a series of prayers and attend confession so the devil will not be able top reach him.
"In order for a person to be exorcised, they have to be fully committed to turning to Christ," Lampert said. "If they resist, the exorcism cannot be performed."
When determining if a person is in fact possessed, Lampert looks for several criteria.
"A person may be possessed if they have an ability to speak unknown languages, unhuman-like strength, the knowledge of the unknown, and an inexplicable aversion to holy places," Lampert said.
During an exorcism, Lampert goes through 10 steps, including prayers and blessings, he said.
"Sometimes the exorcism can be rather dull," Lampert said. "But I have seen a woman levitate and people's faces contort."
During his lecture, Lampert told several stories of extraordinary events that have occurred during his exorcisms. In one story, a person spoke in a childlike voice that was not his own, as it was the devil speaking.
People formed long lines before the microphone in order to ask Lampert questions about his unusual career. Many viewers were also listening attentively to his answers with gasping and awing. Many of the seats at Foellinger Auditorium were occupied throughout the event.
Erika Satterlee, freshman in LAS, said she went into the lecture not knowing much about exorcisms except for depictions in movies.
"The lecture was definitely interesting," Satterlee said. "It freaked me out too, which I knew it would."
This was Lampert's second time speaking at the University around Halloween, Ketcham said.
"Lampert's purpose of speaking is to share the Catholic view of evil and how it works in our lives," Ketcham said. "He is here to tell us the truth."

So according to the some of you the devil does not exist which means god also does not exist, which means there is no good nor evil interesting dont you think ? But just imagine if the devil and hell do exist what will be you fate?????
Exorcist
People die from exorcisms. People die from faith healing. Why?
Good cannot negate the evil of religion, just as evil cannot negate good. If you can't do good in religion without causing evil, then you can't declare religion to be good. Far greater good comes from not doing the evil to begin with.
Be good to each other.
Help!! fairies inhabit the bottom of my garden
Help!! fairies inhabit the bottom of my garden.
A unicorn too.
Sad thing is that there are people who believe with absolute certainty that these things exist.
Much like those who believe that people can be possessed by demons.
Incidentally its always some random hill billy Xtian that gets possessed, why does satan aim so low, why not say possess world leaders?
What is this? The middle ages? I do not know of the Illinois university, is this some theology school?
ummm yeah
possess a world leader hmm why hasnt it been done yet...
have you seen the past few presidents of the united states we had a sex hound and a retard granted bush was the pres we needed for 9/11 but he wasnt to smart and clinton lust is one of the 7 deadly sins wake up u think we are so supirior just because of our telascopes and micro scopes and the splitting of the atom what makes you so cocky to think if theirs something smaller then you then its safe to say that their is something bigger then you im not saying its god or budda or what ever you want to call it because i dont know all im saying their is something out their we cant see or say for certain what this higher power is dont be a faith but have faith in something
Don't be surprised
I can understand why you hold the opinion that you do. We don't know a whole lot with 100% certainty. Did God create us or did we evolve from primordial ooze? True scientific method can prove either way. That means we have to be open, or we risk being ignorant. That would be the real "sad" outcome.
We are so steeped in the daily horrors of our current age (Child porn, human slave trade, murder, financial and political scandals) that we are almost immune to it. Plus, when these things happen, we hear the graphic details of it o-line or t.v.. Some kid gets kidnapped and sodomized, murdered here, some girls end of missing there, some dip shit takes a gun to school with a plan to kill people etc.
What I'm trying to say is that while I chuckled about the unicorns and fairies (garden gnome would of been funnier), who can say Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Osama Bin Laden were not affected by Satanic influence. These guys were not "hill billies". Man...millions of people were murdered by these bozos. Be a little more open, and try to undo the closed off indoctrination that you got in college. I say that with respect because college does that to you. Most of our professors are lefty types and before we know it, we spew the same shit they did in college. Read a little. Hell, we have our current university system thanks the the Catholics. Not to mention the survival of literature, the organization of ancient religious texts into what is now the Bible and the fact that we are not all speaking Arabic after the 7th and 8th centuries. Give em a little slack. You'll be better off in the end. Or you can say F-U and you'll stay the same.
You're all mental!
What on EARTH are you lot talking about? This is the 21st century and the commenters are cheerfully accepting that one can become "possessed by evil spirits". Listen to yourselves, you sound like dark-ages peasants.
Just because those lovely lads in the Catholic Church took some time off from abusing kids to come and regurgitate their antiquated superstitions doesn't make them true.
Satan is a fictional
Satan is a fictional construct created by the wicked in order to coerce behavior from the gullible. Hell is too ridiculous a concept for a thinking man to take seriously.
Unbelievable!!!
That people still believe in all this hocus pocus in this modern age is a sad testament to the gullibility of the ignorant and uneducated of this world. And just because you attend a school doesn't mean you are educated. Some schools, obviously like this one, don't teach....they indoctrinate. Who is going to believe a man in a dress who is not allowed to have sex, yet he insists you call him 'father'? Duh!
When is the human race going to grow up and stop believing rubbish and lies?
Wait, the US is supposedly a
Wait, the US is supposedly a 1st world country and you believe this muck? Welcome to the 2nd dark age it seems.
Unbelievably Sad
Reading the comments here is very depressing. The notion that a university that supposedly holds itself in some type of decent regard has so many students that apparently believe in exorcism is astounding.
Are all these comments fake? I'm utterly baffled.
Is it possible that so many people could be participating in higher education and still be under the spell (pun intended) of such unimaginably ridiculous old-world nonsense?
Does the University of Illinois also have a lot of flat Earth believers?
Exorcism
Here's my question for you gullible twats ...
Why doesn't the Devil ever possess non-believers?
They're already halfway there, and plenty of them are good-looking, charismatic and intelligent. Instead of trying to take over the world one trailer court housewife at a time, he could leave the low-income, low education bracket altogether and get some really efficient tools in his toolbelt. Why settle for a gibbering, illiterate farmer's wife in Romania when you can have a high powered PR exec in New York schlepping your message in some glossy ad campaign?
I guess the Prince of Darkness likes to do things the hard way.
a soldier in the devils place
me as a soldier i see no point in fighting a battel that has alredy been won the people you mention have alredy fallen half way as you said so why waste my time pulling them down ill just let them fall on their own they will find their way to the devil with littel or no help from demons its the belivers you must fight to get the people strong in faith and tradition the people who have not yet been corrupted by all this worlds Bull spit i grew up in the streets of south philly i have seen all types of evil im not some uneducated hick with a book in one hand and a pitch fork in the other i am a street smart soldier have faith brothers and sisters it aint like any of us are getting off this rock alive its not important to argue superstition v.s science because science will destroy us all it is evil it was science that gave us weapons like the nuke what good is it if we launch ours other countries launch theirs and we all die wtf is the point of trusting in science
Wait. Do you people actually
Wait. Do you people actually believe this unfounded, irrational, superstitious witchcraft?
It's Halloween you know, not April Fool's Day...

Are you trolling right now or are you serious?? Jesus used cannabis to cure epilepsy (which in Jesus' time was thought to be demonic possession due to the convulsions).

Only the Tip of the Iceburg
I strongly recommend reading, Evidence of Satan in the Modern World, and the more recent books by Fr. Amorth, An Exorcist Tells His Story, and, An Exorcist: More Stories. You will then have all the knowledge you need. Remember the maxim that you must know yourself and your enemy to win. The devil prefers us to believe he doesn't exist, because it makes his work easier. The signs of possession indicated in the article are dramatic cases that mean the poor soul has probably suffered the possession for many years. We need to catch the attacks much sooner to help these souls.
the priest
I think that this is a bunch of crap i dont believe this ****
The Same Boat
Offensive as you are, I'm right there with you in that I don't agree. The sad truth is that I am a Catholic - I simply don't agree with the idea of an exorcist. Part of this stems from my personal experience, or lack thereof; I have not personally witnessed nor "felt the presence" of any sort of supernatural force in my life. I could easily attribute my own emotions and experiences to the supernatural, but that would be irresponsible given a better, reasonable explanation. It isn't that I don't believe in forces above and beyond my control, I would just rather eliminate all possibilities beforehand.
I apologize if I come off as a bit of a prick, but I think too critically to believe that Satan/a demon/a devil is going to randomly inhabit my body and have me spasm and convulse at the sign of holy objects. Wouldn't a demon have more destructive things to do than make me sit in a corner and drool all day? Maybe a demon is making me type this message - you don't know. And neither do I. Maybe I am the demon himself. I wouldn't have a clue either way, so I just chalk it up to ignorance and go through my day to day.
For me, the core message of Christ - love one another as you love yourself - has absolutely nothing to do with the supernatural and has everything to do with the people around you. Why we devote enough time and effort to make a career out of demon-hunting is beyond me, and if you asked me on the spot, I'd probably tell you that "possessed" individuals are either attention-hungry people in need of a good audience or mentally unstable people in need of a good rubber room. People with faith have better things to do than chase ghosts.
A. I could just as easily not
A. I could just as easily not believe in Germany. I have heard of people talking about it, but have never been there, touched it, or smelled it. Mercedes Benz cars could just be a conspiracy from the US, and they are actually made by a secret division of GM. Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it's real.
B. The damning of souls IS the most destructive thing a demon can do. It is worth nothing for a demon to burn a church if all the souls inside go to heaven. A demon would only be failing to do its duty if the only thing it does is create martyrs for heaven. Damning souls for eternity, THAT is Hell's most lucrative business.
C. And to all who are saying that high figures aren't possessed or without influence: Well, look at leaders who support abortion, or euthanasia. They are certainly pushing towards the damnation of more souls. Abortion is a serious sin, and they are willingly allowing you to commit it more easily with your money.
unfortunately Christ was an
unfortunately Christ was an exorcist and those kinds of legends about him are part of why exorcists still exist today. On the other hand, "love one another as you love yourself" and other variations of it existed for thousands of years before Christianity,so you can actually value that common sense teaching without carrying supernatural demon hunters like Christ and the Catholic church along with it.
Keep the good, discard the bad. Or keep the legendary demon hunter and exorcist employing church and don't be surprised when you hear about exorcists who are employed to hunt demons.
Fair points. The Church
Fair points. The Church keeping exorcists isn't a surprise to me as much as it is an unnecessarily cemented superstition. I do value the core message more than the auxiliary - all people should, as it is the epitome of human goodness, regardless of faith. I don't think religion should be necessarily done away with entirely, it just needs to be made more consistent to the point of helping others concretely rather than abstractly.
EXORCISMS!
The novena rosary prayed and recited daily will certainly grant you protection from both spiritual and earthly enemies in this life and deliver you from all evil!
Saint Michael the
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
Did you put on your robe and
Did you put on your robe and wizard hat before reciting your magical incantation? Prayer does nothing but sate the desire to feel like you're accomplishing something.
Talk
As a trained exorcist too in Rome I agree the most important thing to avoid evil is respecting our ten commendements, good life and prayer. But at the same time we are oblige to tell peple that satan is a real person, not just a 'thing' and Jesus talk about him several times in the Gospel.
Pope Bnedict said that "Today we have a lot of priests that doesn't think lke a catholics any more but like protestants". That gives a lot of confussion for the ones that are lookingfor distinction between true and false. But one day the words of Fatima will be accomplish: "At the end my immaculate heart will triumph".

I am pretty sure that a trained exorcist in Rome would know that there are 10 commandments, not 10 commendments.

Fr. Lampert's talk
The point is there is not enough exorcist priests Wenner. I've been to a home an I know of a women whom is possessed.and needs an exorcist priest. I am not kidding.

Have your priest contact your Diocesan Exorcist. Each Bishop will have someone holding that position. They can begin the investigation and determine if someone with more complete training is required.

I need some help please! In NE Tennessee mountains, very small towns not a very big Catholic community. I had to move from my home, rent an apartment and have no support with this. This horrible thing on me attached at the house when Investigation Team came to investigate. A priest and others say it thinks it owns me and I need an exorcist as does my very active home. I must get immediate help with this from an Exorcist with no more delays please! I can't stand it any longer and I am ready to travel now to get help. The priest in town is not experienced with this and I am waiting to have him come to the house and give a blessing. All activity confirmed by three teams, pastor and deacon all of which cannot offer help. Hear my plea
"For one to become possessed
"For one to become possessed by the devil, one has to have a dedication to the devil, be cursed or lead a life that is full of sin; it is something more than just a struggle against temptation," Lampert said.
This is actually not correct. There are numerous cases, including a recent one attended to by a priest who has done exorcisms for 5 years, where the possessed individual did not lead a life of sin but rather was in a state of grace and was still possessed. God can allow possession to happen to someone who lives a good life in order to obtain reparation for sins committed in a certain area.
I don't know how many cases this priest faces but he obviously has not been around the block yet. He of course needs lots of prayer to carry out this ministry, because us laymen would quail at facing fallen angels without the Church's protection, yet most exorcists trained today do not have all the training and support they need to be truly affective.
i was ... but it's ending now.
i was in a state of grace when they first laid siege. they had to destroy my faith and hold on God in order to take me and a very subtly but insidiously toxic, false soteriology did the trick. it is 26 years later and i am finally getting free with the help of a simple, humble person who loves God and isn't afraid to do what needs to be done. i have retained at least some form of faith in God throughout this entire time and became aware in the past few years that coming under this condition had not been my fault -- my sins had been ordinary things every human being struggles with. i had believed the lie that God had forsaken me, that i had reached some "close of probation" or point of no return and simply was too evil, too wicked, to be saved. that's how they took me.
after 26 years of bondage, having no mind or will of my own, i'm so happy to be finally getting free i don't care how many atheists read this and think i'm an idiot. for the record, i was raised in an upper-middle-class country club community with the very best public schools in what, back then, was the 3rd wealthiest county in the nation. i have an IQ that ranges from 146-160 when tested. at one time i even had what you might consider a minor celebrity status in certain circles. i'm accustomed to being something of an outsider and getting harassed and picked on by idiots and dolts so your mockery does not faze in the slightest. if i could have had a nice little psychosis instead that pills would have fixed i would have been ALL too glad of it!!! I NEVER WANTED THIS AFFLICTION. but thanks be to God, the end is finally in sight. i am being set free and i am SO READY for it!!!
so while i'm by no means some famous mover and shaker i am proof that your scoffing is crap. a lot of those "trailer park people" you refer to are just confused souls who have been taught poor and confusing doctrine from the pulpit by other confused souls. when the struggle with their own inherent nature becomes too much, in frustration they can become convinced demons are involved. but just because they are confused about the source of their struggle does not mean genuine cases do not exist. i was one, and i'm not ashamed or afraid to admit it. i'm just glad it's finally ending and i'm going to be free. you can find a wanna-be demon-buster or self-proclaimed "deliverance minister" on every flipping street corner. load of snake oil peddling morons, the lot of them. finding a truly competent exorcist qualified by God for this work proves a LOT harder. they don't advertise on the 'net or in the yellow pages. you have to pray for one and in God's time He will send someone.
Thanks for listening.
Fr. Lampert said that one can
Fr. Lampert said that one can be cursed...OR live a life of sin. There are people who are in a state of grace but cursed. Fr. Lampert does not disagree with you. However, I am happy that you clarified the fact that often times one can live a life of grace, be untouched in his or her soul, but still be possessed in his or her body. God allows evil to be evident so as to manifest His power and goodness more clearly. Pray and do penance for such souls and for the priests who care for them!
Exorcist shares his past experiences
Unfortunately many of the Catholic hierarchy in the USA are still reluctant to appoint excorcists within their Dioceses, althjough this is slowly changing.
Catholic excorsists are much more common it the Western European countries and also in Latin America, as the understanding of the demonic and the practices of the exorcist are much more accepted in these countries..
Recently there was an excellent series of 3 articles published on the internet about exorcisms, with an interview with an Italian excorcist priest named Alfred Pallotta. The series of articles was very informative. For those interested it is located here:

It's so wonderful to see these holy priests accept the 'cross' of the Exorcist!
But only 12 priests in the whole USA? Wow! No wonder the evil one is running rampant in our culture! But then, we are living in the "culture of death". Right next to this article there is a "Planned Parenthood" advertisement offering "$10.00 off". Off what???
I will certainly keep these priests in my prayers. I'm a retired psych nurse & i've seen the evil one operate up close & personal. That's the hardest thing to do, to try to convince people this evil not only exists, it's personal!!!!
The only thing that scares me
The only thing that scares me is that you were in the medical field, a psych nurse none-the-less, and you chalked up the people to be possessed by evil.
What a shame, those people most likely had actual medical conditions inflicting their central nervous system and in 2009 you blame it on a little red man with a stick...
Exorcism screening
Part of the procedure for screening whether or not full blown exorcism is needed includes a full blown medical and psychological examination to rule out medical and
mental illness. There are many more possessions ruled out than exorcised.
Exorcism
Father's words remind me of the Pope's words: We must exorcise the world by prayer and by penance. First internal penance or repentance, second sacramental penance or Confession, and third external penance or signs of repentance, of a heart turned from evil to goodness, to God (fasting, sacrifice, almsgiving, etc.).
nice ad
Nice ad for Planned Parenthood right next to this article. One step forward, one step back.
Which one is the step
Which one is the step forward? Surely it can't be the superstitious belief in demons and devils.
How sad...
How sad is it that at the same time one is reading an article about the Catholic church (http://bit.ly/D6wtY) that an advertisement for Planned Parenthood appears. I hope and pray that the students of the University of Illinois are smart enough to know the truth about PP.
There's more than 12 US exorcists !
All Bishops are required to appoint an exorcist--A bishop commits a serious sin if he doesn't. However the identity of the exorcist is kept secret for understandable reasons.
This article says there are 12 exorcists in the USA who were trained in Rome--but that does NOT mean that they are the only exorcists in the USA !
Newman and Evil Topics
I'm a believer. I'm a Catholic. I believe in the esistence of evil. I used to go to Mass at Newman but it seems that after Msgr. Swetland left all we hear about is evil and how bad we are on campus. I know evil exists. But, I'd rather be hearing about the Good too. With all do respect to Msgr. Ketcham, you seem to focus too much God's wrath and condemnation. I stopped going there because frankly I got sick of hearing the constant "do not's" and very little of the "do's." You assume too much, there's a lot more good going on throughout the campus than you give credit for and it extends beyond Newman and beyond Catholics. So, give us some credit and teach us how to live the faith rather than telling me how evil I am and a bad person and perhaps then I'll go back to your church.
I am sad to hear you say your
I am sad to hear you say your sick of hearing about the bad and do's and dont;s but every where Ive gone I never hear that kinda talk. In fact they act as if every thing we do is ok! Well I wish our Priest would give us this kinda of talk because sometimes alot lately and look at the world, they are afraid to say anything. So the state of the world and sin is worse because of silence, and we do not need silence. Look my friend turn on the tv and see what is going on, should he keep silent or try to save people from the Devil. Maybe it has touched a sore spot in you? I dont know but if it did then be glad because you can face it and heal. I am not at all perfect and I only wish someone would step up and say these things at my church to help me and others. God Bless
Invitation to author of "Newman and Evil Topics" to talk
I would like to invite the author of "Newman and Evil Topics" to meet with me and talk. As a member of the Church who is upset with something, please do not leave the Church. However, look for those avenues to change what you are dissatisfied with. I would be very happy to speak with you!
Thank you
THank you Msgr. Ketcham for your invitation to speak with me and I appreciate your commitment. I haven't left the Church. Newman is just a different atmosphere now and I don't begrudge you or the flock that attends. I really enjoyed Swetland, Layden and Fr. Robert. I always seemed to leave there with something that gvae me hope. In the times since I so often times leave feeling like I'm doomed for Hell. It's just a matter of preference. By no means did I intend to insult. But, again your assumption was negative. I still go to Church, I go to Holy Cross.
The Holy Mass
Go to the Holy Sacrifice not for a sermon but for Jesus Christ. If you do this, even if the sermon is terrible, you will joyful, for your joy will be in Jesus and He will make you full of His Joy.
Confession
Also, regular confession is also a great sacrament to recieve regularly. That way, we receive the Eucharist with a clean conscience and pure heart. Sometimes we feel guilty because we have unconfessed sin on our heart or because we are scrupulous. A priest can help you get to the heart of the problem in confession and absolve us...you can't beat that!
Please take some
Please take some responsibility. We don't need more priests helping us to feel good about our sin. We need priests who speak the Truth, and the truth is, in this day and age, most of us need many reminders of our weakness and how we can turn from sin. Sin is rampant. We can easily feel good about ourselves by comparing ourselves to those around us. But God is the same and so is His Truth. I, for once, WANT to be reminded to turn from evil. It doesn't offend me in the least.
