UI physics professor wins national award
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - A University of Illinois physics professor will receive the National Medal of Science for his work in magnetic resonance.
The university says that Charles P. Slichter (SLIK'-ter) will receive the award from President Bush at the White House on Sept. 29.
Slichter is being recognized for his use of nuclear magnetic resonance to study the structure of matter. Nuclear magnetic resonance involves placing an object in a strong magnetic field and measuring how it absorbs electromagnetic radiation.
Slichter has been a University of Illinois faculty member since 1949. He is 12th University of Illinois researcher to win the medal.
