Gov. Quinn names two new trustees, holdout trustees won't be forced to resign
Gov. Pat Quinn has appointed Christopher Kennedy and Lawrance Oliver to serve on the University's Board of Trustees.
Quinn's office confirmed Chicago businessman Christopher Kennedy's appointment in advance of the press conference. Kennedy is the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy. His uncle, senator Edward M. Kennedy, died Tuesday. Oliver is the chief counsel for investigations at the Boeing Company.
“On behalf of the University community, I am grateful for the willingness of Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Oliver to serve the University. I thank the Governor for acting quickly to ensure continuity in the functioning of the Board of Trustees," University president B. Joseph White said in a press release.
The governor said he will not forcefully remove Frances Carroll and James Montgomery, the two trustees who have refused to resign. It is not in the University's best interest to enter a lengthy legal battle, he said.
Quinn spoke with Carroll and Montgomery on Friday and said he planned to announce his decision Monday but waited because of a military funeral. The trustees should submit their resignations because "something bad happened" under their tenure, the governor said.
A commission appointed by Quinn called for all trustees to voluntarily resign after an investigation about clout's effect on University admissions. Every trustee besides Caroll and Montgomery offered to step down.
Illinois Senate president John Cullerton, D-Chicago, plans to call a fumigation bill that would remove the two remaining trustees, said Rikeesha Phelon, the senator's press secretary. The bill, which is not aimed specifically at the trustees, calls for the removal of about 750 state employees and members of boards and commissions.
House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, sponsored the bill which passed through the Illinois House of Representatives unanimously. The bill focuses on employees who received political appointments and focuses on those who began serving under former governors George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich.
Opponents of the bill say it is unfair because it will cost hundreds of innocent people their jobs.
During questioning Quinn addressed University administrators and their role in the admissions controversy. President B. Joseph White and chancellor Richard Herman "have some explaining to do" but any decisions on their fate will be left to the new board, Quinn said.
Quinn will make appointments for the five remaining trustee seats. The new board should be in place for September's trustee meeting.

This is an outrage. Montgomery and Carroll abused their influence and yet they get to stay because they used the L-word. So much for their integrity, if they had a shred of it left. As a taxpayer I wouldn't mind seeing a few dollars of my tax bill go into crushing Montgomery's little injunction if it meant we could finally wipe the slate clean of this admissions scandal. I can't tell if Quinn is just spineless or if something exchanged hands under the table before this announcement came down. In this state anything can happen.

Why is Christopher Kennedy, an affluent Chicago Democrat, Northwestern & Boston College Grad, and political actor being picked up for the University of Illinois Board of Trustees?
While I make no claim against Mr. Kennedy, nor claim to know of any ill-doing on his hands, it seems to me that we just kicked out a bunch of affluent Chicago Democrats from the Board, save the ones who didn't have the class to resign and played the race card so they wouldn't have to.
Neither of these appointments are University of Illinois Alumni--a pure "stiff" to the alumni association who was supposed to have a larger role in the admissions process. This all seems highly suspect to say the least.
Looks like business as usual at the "tarnished" University of Illinois

It's rather unfortunate that these two did not in fact offer their resignations. This is a vetting process and a tremendous opportunity for them to redeem themselves by having the Governor reappoint them, if he so chose to do it. By invoking the "lawyer" clause they are claiming that they do not think that the would in fact be reappointed if G. Quinn looked them over. They both were found guilty of smaller infractions but I wonder how much did not come to light if they decided to threaten legal action that would surely hurt the university that the "care for."

What a tremendous joke on all of the citizens of this State, and all of the University's alumni around the country. After weeks of stating his intention to act, Gov. Quinn simply folds up like a cheap rusty lawn chair. Apparently the black vote in February's Democratic primary is of much greater concern than restoring the reputation and integrity of this State's flagship University. Don't kid yourselves - this sudden change of heart was all about politics and not about "litigation". Given the report generated by the Mikva Commission, how could any court find that these two Trustees had not neglected their duty to the University of Illinois, and thus deserve to be removed from the Board of Trustees ? The delays in Gov. Quinn taking final action on these two hold-out Trustees led me to suspect that this would happen, but it does not make it any more acceptable. One can only hope that Gov. "Spineless" will ultimately pay a heavy price at the polls in 2010 for his failure to stand up on behalf of the students of Illinois and their families. They, along with the University, have been the victims of these unseemly clout-based admissions.
