Wedding and baby registries are common-known ideas for people to ask for help when entering a new chapter of their life. One thing that has become more common in years past are dorm registries, to help students when they enter college.

However, one thing that doesn’t commonly exist is a registry for college students trying to pay off loans.

Beverly Gibson came up with a solution for this problem by developing a Web site where students can receive monetary donations to help pay for their student loans.

Lily’s List is a new Web site that was launched in March. The site was created to help ease the burden of student loan debt.

Gibson, director of marketing for the site, said the site is “for someone who is taking their student loans seriously.”

Students have to be willing to give up their birthday and holiday gifts from friends and family and have them put into their account instead.

“With anticipated graduation gifts, this is a good thing for graduating seniors,” said Gibson.

According to the Web site, the gift donations go directly into federal or private student loans.

“Getting the money would help out a lot,” said Kimberly Martin, freshman in DGS. “It would be easier to slowly add money every time you’re around family.”

When students register with Lily’s List they get a personal profile page where family, friends, businesses and alumni can help pay their debt. As the site has recently launched, there are currently 20 students that have started an account on Lily’s List.

The site plans to run specials, including that the first 100 students that sign up get 10 dollars put into their account.

Lily’s List also has a student of the week each week. The student who is selected will have money put into their account by a local advertiser.

Some students are not sure if they would participate in this type of service.

“I would be interested. If your family wants to help you out with college, I don’t see why they can’t,” said Tyler Nelson, freshman in LAS. “But also, why couldn’t they just give you money so you don’t need a student loan? So, it may not even be needed if your family is just going to pay for your tuition regardless.”

Gibson added that the site has many new ideas and hopes to share revenue of future advertising with students.

The challenge of the Web site, Gibson said, is to get a copy of the monthly statement. However, if students don’t get their monthly statements, their parents may start an account for them.

Gibson said she believes her site is one of the only that exists, and it can be a valuable resource for students once it takes off.

This is a model similar to peer-to-peer loans for college (where you sign up family, friends, those barely acquainted with you, etc.) except it is on the back-end instead of up front.

My son did something similar to this when he graduated from high school. He made a college fund using myregistry.com and asked that anyone wanting to give him graduation gifts contribute to the fund instead. He has kept it open and received contributions for holidays and such too. He is now a senior in college, and is hoping to get more contributions in lieu of college graduation presents. It won't cover the whole thing of course, but it will certainly help!

It's nice not to have to pay back the gifts and it's nice that the money goes right to the loan account so it can't be spent on other (more fun) things!

I hope Lily's List will be able to help out more and more college students who are determined to finish their college education no matter how difficult times maybe during their stay. Your website sounds promising and I hope it will help ease the burden for college students in managing their schoolarships and school loans. Maybe do counseling at some point if you guys can and make a forum for students and visitors to communicate and keep each other informed of the bad and good in loans and grants. It would help members if you make the site a source of needed information for such issues so they don't make the wrong decisions and end up drowning in debt after they graduate.

Auto Refinancing

Wow, this is a good idea. I am currently an undergraduate junior at a private school and tuition and loans are through the roof! Any type of extra money will help. I even considered auto refinancing to save money. The lower APR has greatly reduced my monthly payments and allowed me more flexibility. This way I can use the extra money to help pay off my student loans.
