American Red Cross promotes fire safety after weekend incidents

The American Red Cross is talking about possible preventative measures in case of fires after two incidents in Champaign and Vermilion Counties. “The causes of the fires have ranged from air conditioning fires to box fan fires so we’ve just been trying to get information out to the community,” said Erin Miller, American Red Cross communications coordinator.

Petitions for city positions available According to a press release from Champaign, petitions for city positions are available starting Tuesday for the Office of the Mayor, three City Council Members At-Large and City Council Member-District 5 can be obtained at the Office of the City of Champaign City Clerk, 102 N. Neil Street in Champaign. Petitions must be submitted between Nov. 15 and Nov. 22. A consolidated primary will be held on Feb. 22, 2011 if necessary. The consolidated election will be held Apr. 5. University and Champaign police caution community The University of Illinois Police Department sent out a crime alert Monday informing students of an aggravated battery that occurred Aug. 18 at approximately 3:10 a.m. The incident occurred on the 600 block of South Fourth Street, Champaign. According to the crime alert, the victim, a 21-year-old male, was approached by three individuals while walking on the sidewalk when he was attacked. He was then given assistance by two unknown males and a female. Anyone with information about this incident should call the Champaign Police Department.
