Between bookstores, digital copies and book rentals, students have a variety of options when purchasing textbooks.

Digital and renting textbooks are some of the newer options available to students on campus.

"Each year, more and more students look into digital," said Michael Hubbard, store manager for Folletts Bookstore. "Regular textbooks are still what students are going with but we expect digital to be a good part of students are going for in the future."

While the average savings for renting is about 50 percent off the new book price, Hubbard said it may not be the best option if the books are going to be used for more than one semester.

"We try to make sure the books aren’t sold out within the first week," he said. "Some books we sell more than others. Some less."

If a class sells out, Hubbard said Folletts is usually able to have it restocked within 24 hours because the store is based in Chicago.

"We try to keep most of the textbooks for most of our classes a month after classes starts," he said. "That gives students time to change clases, drop classes, add classes and then make their purchasing decision."

Monday and Tuesday were the busiest days, he said.

"Our lines have been fairly decent most of the week," Hubbard said. "The rest of the week is still pretty busy with people looking to change classes, get their schedule finalized, decide if they’re getting the books or not."

Price comparison websites are also helpful for college students looking to buy cheap books. Sites like www.bargainbookmole.org find the best prices and conditions of books anywhere online. This is great for students who don't want to use electronic books or for those who want to be able to resell later.
