Block-I chant portrays ‘neither patriotism nor remembrance’
The vast majority of 9/11 observances in this country cannot be seen as politically neutral events. Implicit in their nature are the notions that lives lost at the World Trade Center are more valuable than lives lost in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and elsewhere; that the motives of the 9/11 attackers had nothing to do with genuine grievances in the Islamic world regarding American imperialism; and that the U.S. has been justified in the subsequent killing of hundreds of thousands in so-called retaliation.
The observance at Saturday’s football game was no different. A moment of silence was followed by a military airplane flyover; in between, Block-I students chanted “USA, USA.” This was neither patriotism nor remembrance in any justifiable sense, but politicization, militarism, propaganda and bellicosity. The University is a public institution that encompasses the political views of all, not just the most (falsely) “patriotic.” Athletic planners should cease such exploitation for political purposes. They might at least consider how most Muslim students, American or otherwise, would respond to this nativist display; or better, Muslims and others that live their lives under the threat of our planes, drones and soldiers.
The overwhelmingly white, privileged, Block-I students should be ashamed of their obnoxious, fake-macho, chicken-hawk chant, while poverty-drafted members of their cohort fight and die in illegal and immoral wars for the control of oil. University administrators need to eliminate from all events such “patriotic” observances, which in this country cannot be separated from implicit justifications for state-sponsored killing.

I think I speak for all sane university students when I say that you sir are a buffoon with extremist views who no one will ever take seriously. I find your racism against whites to be alarming as well since you claim to be affiliated with the university. Do you work for the Hussein administration?

Green is so far on the fringe of the fringe even the local leftists don't want anything to do with him. So the only venue for his crazed impotent rage is the DI letters column.

Mr. Green I feel that you should be the one who should be ashamed of your obnoxious and downright offensive views on what it means to be proud of your country. This is AMERICA and as AMERICANS we come together to show support for one another. At the game, the students were not chanting USA! in support of the war in Iraq or for any reason other than being proud to be a part of the greatest country on earth and to show that we are one.
You sir, are an idiot. Maybe we should do exactly what you want us to do and lets never be proud of our country, lets just never even acknowledge where we come from and never do anything to upset anyone. That way people like you can take over and we can lose everything we stand for in this country.
September 11 was one of the most horrific days of my life and I support whoever was affected by the tragedy and I support the troops as much as I can. If you cant acknowledge that, or how wonderful this country is, then you can just get out. America...love it or leave it. We will always stand for one another and freedom will never die.
Hey Mr. Green...USA USA USA!

I would hope that American Muslim students would join in the patriotic celebration of their home country.

Professional? Describing David Green as such certainly stretches the definition a mite.
This is the same David Green that talks about a Jewish conspiracy, calling it the "Holocaust industry," as a means of supporting Israel and certain Jewish-American elites. He accuses Elie Wiesel of fabrication. He bitches and whines about Zionists suppressing support for Palestinian rights, and then turns around and writes a hate filled, four paragraph bit complaining about students shouting "USA, USA"?
The hypocrisy is astounding! He complains about a Zionist conspiracy suppressing the rights of his compatriots, acknowledges that "The University is a public institution that encompasses the political views of all...", and yet calls for the suppression of student speech-the chanting of the words "USA, USA."
In one of his other articles, David Green complains about the documentary Columbia Unbecoming that accused certain professors at Columbia's Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC) department of "intimidating students on the basis of political disagreement." He says the documentary was part of a Zionist plot to suppress pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel speech.
Well, here stands the great defender of free speech, exposed for the fraud that he is. You can call for freedom of speech on campus, or you can try to suppress speech you don't like, but you really can't do both at the same time, Mr. Green.

Sir, Without casting aspersions on your political, social, or religious views, this is a simple issue. Being proud to be a citizen of the United States and to celebrate it in any way that does not damage others (hurt feelings aside) should not be denigrated. Apologizing or agonizing over those who do so shows a lack in you. A citizens of the United States should support the country, work for freedom, and ignore race and religion while doing so. Many (I hope most) are trying to do so. And any time we say "don't do that! It might offend when we're only saying USA!" we are forgetting something (which all the groups want us to forget). We are all Americans! If we could just get back to that, a lot of this would go away.
Just as your bigotry should. Because you're as guilty of this as the worst extremist when you forget that we're one people - Americans.

I don't disagree with much of your argument, but I wonder what you are trying to accomplish besides making yourself look like an ass.
As the date is significant in recent history, how would you, Mr. Green, recommend it be remembered?

Now, if someone were chanting 'burn the heretic' or 'death to Islam', then i'd take notice.
But showing support for your own country isn't anti-islamic or anti-middle east. It's showing support for your country. If I were to venture a guess, I would say that if there were muslim students in the crowd then they would take up the call as well.
Now, if there were muslim students that vocally protested against such a display, then that would be a different matter. But, from what I understand, this is a personal view of yours that the support should stop and not the reaction from a problem within the student body. If that is the case, then what you are trying to say is flat-out wrong.
Your views, though sad to admit, only add to the turbulence of the situation in our country. Instead of a rational discourse and exchange of ideas, we instead must face hypocrisy, threats and outright ignorance to the important matters of the day. It's just like the people who say we shouldn't build mosques because it would take away from our 'Christian Heritage'. It's fear mongering, and it should stop.
Also, i'd like to know what the muslim students thought of this letter. Please, give us your reactions. Sharing ideas will lead us forward.
Respectfully,
Anonymous Soldier

I joined the Army. I saw what we did in Iraq. I've heard from my fellow soldiers what we did in Afghanistan. It's not right. How is your attitude of "Anything we do in defense of our nation is justified" any different from "Anything we do in defense of our religion is justified"

Speaking as a NY liberal, I'd like to state the author is a friggin' idiot. I'll assume he also tends to screw over his grad students, since he seems to be a self-important twit.

Mr Green once more reflects his radicalized homosexual views with his diatribe against the USA. He should know what an Islamic America would mean to gays in the US. Shame on you, Mr. Green. You are...AGAIN...the mealy-mouthed face of leftist pap at the U of I.

Mr. Green, only someone submerged in the deepest detachment from reality could even begin to entertain the conclusion that shouting "USA" is some cryptofascist call for muslim destruction and state-sponsored warmongering. Remember that some of the world's muslims are also Americans, and that all Americans were damaged by 9/11 in some fashion. Would you even entertain the idea that shouting USA repeatedly is also about protecting all people, including muslims, in the USA?
It is like the old saying goes: when all you have is a hammer, everything else looks like nails. My suggestion is to purchase some additional tools for your mental toolshed. Until then, I would strongly suggest introspection of your mental framework for coming to ridiculous conclusions as you have in this "article".

Patriotic Muslim-Americans should support our efforts to combat Islamofascism and terror, just as many patriotic German-Americans served with great distinction in our fight against Arian fascism during WWII.

I think that says it all: University Academic Professional.
Aside, of course, from the fact I find it hilarious that the author is automatically assuming that Muslim students are non-Americans.

Your Paean to all that is hyper-liberal fails to mention that American Womyn dont make as much as men and there is no national gay marriage. You could also have tossed in something about Global warming/change/disruption, institutional racism and sensitivity to Wiccans but all in all I think you hit every single liberal trope and catch-phrase you could given the brevity of your post and the fact that you repeat the first paragraph.
