St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization that invests research and money into childhood cancer, announced the recipient of $142,658, a press release said. Navin Pinto, M.D., at the University of Chicago received funding for a two-year pediatric oncology fellowship.

Pinto, one of the 11 new St. Baldrick’s Foundation Fellows, in collaboration with his mentor M. Eileen Dolan, Ph.D., will research and attempt to understand why patients fail chemotherapy treatments and whether there’s a difference in survival among racial groups.

According to the press release, Pinto said the project will “help us better understand the complex interplay between each patient’s genes, their cancer and their response to therapy.”

Pinto said he envisions improving the treatment of cancer by tailoring the therapy for each patient.

Currently, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation provides more funding for research into childhood cancer than all other organizations excluding the U.S. government. The St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events, which has drawn volunteers and raised funds successfully, has raised more than $21 million this year and accumulated about $90 million since 2000.
