Student Senate to revise racial profiling resolution
The Illinois Student Senate sent back to committee a resolution that speaks out against racial profiling in the wake of a controversial Arizona immigration act at its Wednesday meeting in the Illini Union Pine Lounge.
This version of the resolution featured several changes since it was discussed last week. One item, which urged the University to cut its financial ties with the state of Arizona, was taken out.
While the resolution still opposes the Arizona law, it focuses more on how racial profiling issues affect campus. For example, the new version adds a provision that suggests that the senate should sponsor a “know your rights campaign” when it comes to police stops and consent searches.
During public comment, Carlos Rosa, senator emeritus and senior in LAS, spoke in support of the resolution.
“(It) is something that is taking a proactive stance. It isn’t negative. It isn’t something that will divide this community,” Rosa said. “Rather it will bring students together. It is an issue that is very important to the community and students.”
During the meeting, an amendment to the resolution was passed which took out items addressing cases such as that of Kiwane Carrington, a 15-year-old African American who was killed in an altercation with Champaign Police Chief R.T. Finney and Officer Daniel Norbits. Some senators were concerned about having this case in the resolution because of wording issues and a lack of verification proving that it was due to racial profiling.
Another concern expressed was the possibility that the resolution was attacking local police. Teresa Ramos, student senator and author of the resolution, said that was not the intention, and that the purpose of the resolution was to let the campus and community police know that the issue of racial profiling is something the student senate is concerned with.
The resolution was ultimately referred back to committee, but it may be voted on at the next meeting. The Committee on Student Rights will discuss the resolution Tuesday at the ISS complex in the Illini Union at 7 p.m. The Committee on Cultural and Minority Student Affairs will meet next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Illini Union.
“I think anytime you call yourself the official voice of the student body and to better serve the constituents, you have to make sure that all the facts are correct and complete,” said David Wall, student senator and junior in LAS. “That is the purpose of committees.”
Despite the deadlock on the racial profiling resolution, the senate did pass a resolution calling for Champaign County Clerk Mark Shelden to choose a centrally located polling place on campus.
While ISS suggested the Illini Union as a polling place, Shelden has suggested the Levis Faculty Center.
In previous election years, the University has hosted multiple polling places at buildings such as Illinois Street Residence Hall, Snyder Hall, Lincoln Avenue Residence Hall and the University YMCA.
While the Champaign County Board makes the final decision, Shelden can make a suggestion.
A resolution to make ICES information available to students will be voted on next week, Sept. 15, in the Illini Union Pine Lounge at 7 p.m.

Your report has it wrong. The campus has the same multiple polling place locations to vote on election day.
This new early voting location was an unfunded mandate demanded by the Illinois legislature this year.
NOWHERE else in the county is this extra ability to vote early given. (Early voting done at the county clerk's office for everyone)
Very unfair to the rest of the county voters and taxpayers!

I would like to invite and encourage all students, faculty, and members of the Champaign-Urbana community to attend the Student Senate Meeting next Wednesday September 15th from 7-9pm. The meeting will be in the Pine Lounge of the Illini Union. I am sure student senators will continue to debate whether or not racial profiling is a relevant issue to students on campus AND if the student senate should, as the official voice of the student body, do anything about it.
SIT IN at that meeting, and VOICE your opinions on the topic!

The ISS would do much better with its time by investigating Teresa Ramos and her attempt to use both her own position (indeed a questionable one. In one article in 2009 she describes herself as a masters student; two months later in another article, a PhD student.) and to pressure faculty members to engage in unethical capricious grading by offering special grade-based concessions to students with a specific opinion and viewpoint. Such actions would clearly violate the Handbooks of UI students, faculty, not to mention ethics laws of the state of ILL.

... but the lack of POLICE ACTION regarding the rampant crime on campus, that's what the real problem is.
The FACT of the matter is that 95% of the violent crimes on campus are perpetrated by young black, occasionally Latino males. No need to be beating around the bush about it. (And yeah, I think that the 5% of the violent offenders who are white are just as disgusting.)
Due to radical lefties such as the ones who try to abusively push this idiotic resolution down the throats of the U of I student community, the police is literally afraid to address the problems and to defend/protect law-abiding students of all races and background.
Don't expect the ilk of Rosa and Ramos to ever admit the extent of these problems, a lot more pressing to the REAL LIFE of the campus than condemning, out of typical ignorance, an excellent, human rights-respecting Arizona law.

And your sources for this "95%" number is....? Nonexistant, I'm sure. How about instead of just race baiting by making up statistics, you actually read any articles, or take ANY classes about constitutional law, criminology, or sociology. Or, at the very least, talk to someone that isn't an angry racist.

... your police alert emails going back the last few years.
One in twenty emails talks about Caucasian perpetrators.
Of course dealing with facts is a little harder than throwing around phony accusations of racism.
Angry? I bet that the people who are robbed blind or beaten up or put into the hospital, by delinquents of any skin color, are deeply angry. Police catching the perpetrators would be more efficient in dealing with this than taking any irrelevant class.

... but it is quite obvious that the local police is doing a TERRIBLE job at policing the campus (where most of the victims reside) and the ghetto (where most of the perpetrators come from).
Probably they are intimidated by the brazen race-peddlers who try to make the lives of the police officers who actually attempt to do their duty an inferno. (The Kiwane Whatever case is a good example - a typical hooligan, victim of his own violent/irresponsible acts, yet transformed in some kind of phony hero by the irresponsible "community" which wants at the same time to have law and order, while crying wolf whenever police involvement results in unexpected consequences.)
Real story:
A very good friend of mine, brilliant Chinese PhD student, was hit four years ago by two black guys who robbed his bag... full of notebooks and engineering books. (I don't think the prey of their violent looting helped them much.)
My friend fell down, broke his head and his jaw on the pavement, needed expensive and painful medical care, and physical therapy as well. He still isn't himself, and what he and his sweet wife had to go through I wouldn't wish on my enemies. And he's the nicest, most honest guy in the world.
What did the police do? NOTHING. They treated him with indifference, they made NO EFFORT to catch the criminals. NOTHING.
We hear all the time about this type of violent crimes on campus. (No, I don't care about their race, skin color and other c**p, the white/Latino/whatever perpetrators of similar acts are just as disgusting - we are discussing the facts of the matter here, not some academic proposition.)
Did the police catch any of these criminals? ANY? Not all, not a majority, but at least 25% of them? Nada. Nothing. Rien. Zilch.
It's time to quit political correctness and to simply recognize that, while a majority of the ghetto inhabitants may be and most probably are law-abiding citizens, a crushing majority of the violent crimes on campus are being perpetrated by young males from the northern "neighborhoods"... and THE POLICE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Please. Hello. Is anybody listening?
PS Let's also spare a thought for the black victims of black hooligans...
PLEASE, give me a break about me being motivated by racism.
In 1955,

the murder of an innocent black teenager by horrible white racists was absolutely disgusting and unforgivable. Unfortunately, more than one such event happened, then, before and after.
Why should we pretend TODAY that the rampant phenomenon of black-on-white AND black-on-black crime TODAY doesn't exist, or excuse it through half-baked sociological mumbo-jumbo?
Murder is murder, violent attacks are violent attacks. White people bleed, black people bleed. We are all individual human beings, not representatives of a "race". Confront the real statistics, and try to improve them. The overwhelmingly law-abiding inhabitants of the afflicted neighborhoods, of all "races," will thank you!
Today, when the new victims are not as often Emmett Till's (killed by murderous, horrible white racists, may they rot in hell) as they are Derrion Albert's (the innocent Chicago black kid murdered by sadistic black hooligans), it IS time to deal with FACTS, not rhetorics, and to stop bringing ideology into play. No person having their skull broken in by a criminal will find solace in some pseudo-academic take on the "root causes" and the "socio-economic" conditions which "explain" the violent act they fell victim to.
