Steve Lavigne, instructor of Hwa Rang Do, a Korean martial art, demonstrates ways to protect oneself against assailants at the Hwa Rang Do academy at 1508 N. Cunningham Ave. in Urbana on Sunday. Each demonstrated position (here and below in the story) can be used to disable an assailant, or as a means of protection and defense against a perpetrator.

Every few days, it seems as if students receive yet another e-mail with the all too familiar subject heading: CRIME ALERT. These e-mails have recently contained increasing reports of aggravated batteries and sexual assaults occurring closer to the center of campus. With these alarming events taking place, students who want to better prepare themselves for a dangerous encounter can find several self-defense options in the Champaign-Urbana area.

The University Police Department offers a program for women called the Rape Aggression Defense System, or RAD. This comprehensive program began in Virginia but was established on the UI campus in 1996 as a way to help women learn ways to defend against sexual assault.

Sergeant Joan Fiesta, a certified RAD instructor, said that the classes cover a wide range of issues that play a role in crimes against women.

“We enhance a woman’s natural instinct to resist and develop techniques that would be easiest to use in case of an attempted abduction or sexual assault,” Fiesta said. “We do work on strikes with the hands, elbows and knees. We also touch on a lot of hard issues, but the end result is to empower women to make positive choices.”

The class consists of four three-hour sessions that involve lectures, physical drills that attempt to imitate real-life attacks and discussions meant to help participants understand the value in their safety.

“I open the class with some points from the radKIDS Personal Empowerment Safety Education class,” Fiesta said. “The first [point] being: ‘Nobody has the right to hurt me because I’m special.’ Out of modesty, we don’t go around telling people, ‘I’m special.’ However, self-value, self-worth is extremely important to a person who wants to survive.”

Steve Lavigne, owner and chief instructor at the Hwa Rang Do Martial Arts Academy in Urbana, also urges potential victims to assert their power.

“[Students] can’t be afraid to make a scene and use their voice,” Lavigne said. “You have to let the person know to stop. They have to be deadly serious.”

The Hwa Rang Do Academy opened in 2006 and offers free self-defense classes for all age groups every month. Lavigne’s classes teach proper stance and practical moves that can be applied to a dangerous situation. Though classes are offered once per month, Lavigne encourages students to come multiple times in order to effectively develop skills well enough to use them instinctively.

One of the first lessons Lavigne teaches during his sessions is how to hit an attacker. He says trying to outright punch someone is an easy way to injure the hand and lower chances of escape. Instead Lavigne recommends using the palm of the hand and aiming for a vulnerable area like the nose.

“If people get hit in the nose, it bleeds, and then they can’t see because their eyes start watering, which allows you to more easily get away,” Lavigne said.

When a weapon is involved it gets trickier. According to Lavigne the use of a weapon will many times result in some sort of injury for a victim. The most important thing to do is to never let the weapon out of sight. This may even involve grabbing an attacker’s threatening arm and trying to keep the weapon away.

“You can’t be afraid to hurt someone,” Lavigne said. “No one has the right to put their hands on you without your consent...if they do, then force must be used to prevent it.”

Whether students choose to take self-defense classes or not, trying to avoid these dangerous situations altogether is the best option. University Police Lieutenant Skip Frost encourages students to be aware of their surroundings by taking off music headphones and resisting the urge to talk or text on the phone while walking at night. Frost also urges students to walk in groups if possible and to report any suspicious or harmful activity as soon as it occurs.

“It is such an urban myth that the police will come in, take a crime report and then arrest you if you’ve been drinking while underage,” Frost said. “If you just got your lip split by four guys, we’re not going to give you a drinking citation. Witnesses and victims will sometimes wait an hour or even a day to report a crime. The chances of us solving that problem go up exponentially the sooner we are notified.”

I find both this article to be deeply racist.

We don't know yet who the perpetrator is, but let's remember he is an African-American for sure, and as such he bears with him centuries over centuries of persecution, like many other American heroes including Louis Farrakhan, Oprah, Barack H. Obama, Rosa Parks, Al Sharpton and O. J. Simpson.

Even today, people like Barack Obama and Oprah are offered no openings, no fairness, no opportunity... just because they are a persecuted minority. Should we wonder that another poor African-American, the voice of freedom-fighting, feels like striking back at the horrible American society? Are we starting to forget about slavery?

Any so-called "victim" attacked by the true victims of the American society, the so-called "criminals," must be racists themselves, otherwise they would openly acknowledge that institutionalized racism, of which they are an integral part, is at fault for these African-Americans having no choice but to respond through desperate actions. The white girls attacked by valiant African-American freedom fighters should not defend themselves, but be proud they can help in instating racial harmony, through their personal sacrifice.

I hereby propose that Daily Illini initiates a defense fund for African-American people who are unfairly accused of crimes they may have committed, but ibky while the true root causes of their unfortunate - but never evil - actions were not being addressed.

Allow African-Americans to express themselves the best they can. As long as the perptrator of a mugging, of a rape, of a murder is African-American, trying to stop the poor man is a horrible form of racism, which should not be tolerated at U of IL. The article and the photos seem to invite violence against innocent, defenseless African-American rapists, muggers, and murderers. For shame.

I was mugged once. It was over even before I knew what had happened. I was attacked from behind unexpectedly, instantly. WHAM! And I was on the ground. In an instant. Had I been carrying a gun or trained in martial arts, neither would have helped. This is what so many people forget or willfully ignore. Attackers usually hit when you least expect it and when you are most vulnerable. Think about it. How often is a mugger going to announce "OK, I'm about to hit you now! Get ready! Here I come to attack you!" Never. They count on surprise. If they can't surprise you, they're less likely to attack you. So about the only thing you can do to lower your risk of attack, apart from avoiding certain places at certain times, is to remain watchful and careful. And even then a determined attacker might not stop. Unfortunately, not much else works.

Please tell me this is sarcasm.

However, I believe that we are talking about people knowing how to defend themselves when they are confronted by someone threatening to harm them; worse, are in the process of doing so. Regardless of the race of the perpetrator, anyone fearing for their physical safety should not cower from defending themselves for fear of being labeled a racist/bigot.

You're calling OJ Simpson and Barack Obama "American Heroes" and putting them in the same category as ROSA PARKS? I think you need to think about this some more.

Tonight (Thursday) at 7pm in the combat room of the ARC, there is going to be another free self-defense workshop. A certified instructor will be teaching Krav Maga, the self defense method used by the Israeli military. It is very easy to learn and very effective, I encourage everyone to attend if possible! There will be another next Tuesday (also in the combat room) at 7pm as well.

I think self-defense classes are absolutely necessary for both men and women. However, the latest incident also demonstrates that the university needs to take action regarding campus security. This girl was attacked while she was taking a shower in a "secured" dorm! She wasn't wondering around at 2 am, drunk, or high...she was taking a shower! So, this needs to be a team work....I do my part being smart, learning self-defense, not putting myself in danger, but you (yes YOU, authorities) make sure you're doing your job.

I am being attacked, because people cannot deal with the truth.

The truth is that we African-American victims have been screwed with so much that we don't even know who we are, where we are, and what we should do.

I find all the comments criticizing my comment very racist. If you disagree with me, you are a racist by definition.

O J Simpson (not to be confused with the trailer trash Homer) is the greatest American hero. Not only did he refuse to accept institutionalized racism, but he bravely struck back against it. If you don't like it, tough cookie.

Jeremiah Wright came close to being as courageous as that, but not all the way.

You obese American white trash should be thankful we have heroes like Barack Obama, Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, Crystal Gail Mangum, Tawana Brawley, Michelle Obama, Eddie Long, and Jeremiah Wright to set you right. Oppose the unstoppable wave of racial justice at your own peril.

Unless "Voice of Reason" is a certain Mr. David Green, s/he probably is being sarcastic. No one else on this campus I know takes PC so far as to being racist in the opposite direction and perpetuating the problems.

Make that: FREE self-defense (Krav Maga) workshop TOMORROW (Thursday) and next Tuesday (November 11th and 16th) from 7-8pm at the ARC combat room.

Seems to be somebody who put a lot of effort in making some sort of perverted point.

Sarcasm or not: he is either actually racist, or presenting an elaborate example of how racism is sometimes blown out of proportion.

I'm hoping it's the latter. The creative way through which he decided to leave his point open to interpretation is somewhat amusing/impressive.

We get all these Crime Alerts, but we never get Resolution Alerts. How often are these Crime Alerts issued and the DI (ignoring its journalistic responsibility) and police never tell us if and when subjects of the alerts are arrested and/or the alert is resolved? We never get alerts about the resolution of the Crime Alerts. I believe that articles like this with their big, blaring headlines and the constant Crime Alerts are used to artificially create an atmosphere of fear on campus. Why? If there's the perception of lots of crime on campus, certain groups stand to gain funding and/or not have their funding cut. It's shameful that sensationalist journalism and money empower artificial fear.
