The Cirque du Soleil event at the Assembly Hall on Wednesday marked a first for the venue, as those in attendance had the option of buying alcohol as part of a pilot program approved by University administration a few weeks ago.

Champaign City Council voted 6-2 Tuesday night to support an ordinance about a federal grant application called Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws, or EUDL. This vote came after the council originally rejected the grant application Feb. 16.

University Interim Chancellor and Provost Robert Easter addressed the Illinois Student Senate about the current financial state of the University at its weekly meeting Wednesday evening. He discussed what initiatives the University has taken to save money and other possibilities for the future.

The University’s library contains just over 11 million volumes and is the third largest collegiate library in the country. But like everything else, books fall apart, and it is up to one department within the library to make sure that the vast collection of knowledge in our possession is preserved for as long as possible.

The University is encouraging students traveling to Mexico this spring break to reconsider their plans, according to a Massmail. Mexico is marked as “a location of elevated risk as described by the U.S. State Department Travel Warning,” according to the Massmail.

With spring break on the horizon, many students are gearing up to hit the road for their week off. But they’ll likely be paying more at the pump, as gas prices in Illinois have risen an average of 5.4 cents per gallon this week compared to a nationwide increase of 3.8 cents per gallon, according to Gasbuddy.com.

The Persian Cultural Association hosted a traditional fire festival in preparation for the Iranian New Year on the Quad on Tuesday. “This event is called Chahar-Shanbe Soori,” said Amin Jahromi, graduate student and member of the board for the Persian Cultural Association. “It literally means ‘Red Wednesday.’ It is a prelude to Iranian New Year. Our new year starts on the first day of spring.”

A 21-year-old man was arrested at the 1500 block of North Prospect Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police report, the offender was arrested for driving with a suspended driver’s license and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.
