Supporters continue to see need for at-large seats
11:26 PM 11/8/2004 — Urbana citizens voted overwhelmingly last Tuesday against a referendum that would have added two at-large seats to the city council, but supporters of the bill still believe a change is necessary. The bill would have made the city council a nine-member body, with seven members elected from wards and two elected citywide.
UI political groups react to outcome of 2004 election

Community ready for change in state's attorney's office
11:28 PM 11/8/2004 — Individuals and area organizations appeared optimistic about the outcome of Tuesday's Champaign County state's attorney race. Democrat Julia Rietz beat Republican incumbent John Piland by almost 19,000 votes, taking 62 percent of the total vote.
Rietz said she is looking forward to taking office, saying she plans to change the way the office is run and its relationship to the community.
Urbana City Council discusses Philo Road report, action plan
11:29 PM 11/8/2004 — The Urbana City Council heard a presentation Monday night on revitalizing the Philo Road area. John Regetz, economic development division manager, presented the actions taken and the results of a study conducted to determine the economic impacts of the Philo Road Business District.
Champaign County Board reacts to election commission results
11:35 PM 11/8/2004 — On Nov. 2, Champaign County voted 38,093 to 34,585 against a proposed elections commission. The Champaign County Board made the initial proposition in 2003 for the creation of the commission, but failed to pass it by a vote of 14 to 13. The board decided to add the referendum to last week's ballot in hopes of alleviating some of the county clerk's duties, as some Democrats on the board said they felt Champaign County Clerk Mark Shelden is biased.
Artwork raises censorship question
11:10 PM 11/8/2004 — On the first day of the photo exhibit, "It's not you, it's me," University students discovered the view to one of their displays was being obstructed by an 8-inch by 10-inch warning taped on the wall next to the photo.
"Troy the Cunt and Jeremy the Shit," created by Troy Hayes, junior in FAA, and Jeremy Hayes, sophomore in FAA, is a remake of a 1969 photograph named "George the Cunt and Gilbert the Shit" by Gilbert Proesch and George Passmore, two British artists.
Voters pass tax to help people with developmental disabilities
11:12 PM 11/8/2004 — After many months of hard work, the "Vote Yes" developmental disabilities campaign was successful in earning 65 percent of the votes last Tuesday. A referendum passed for a county tax that will fund various programs to benefit people with developmental disabilities.

10:55 PM 11/8/2004 — (U-WIRE) NEW YORK - According to rumors, some Columbia University students whose only symptom is fear of a stuffy room are resorting to faking disabilities to obtain better housing. "There's a running joke that people get allergies their sophomore year," said Scott Wright, assistant vice president of Housing and Dining, the office responsible for assigning rooms to students, including those with special needs.
