Tuition overtakes funding
11:29 PM 2/14/2005 — For the first time in the history of the University, student tuition exceeds the amount of money the school receives from state funding at the Champaign-Urbana campus this school year. "The state is going through a hard time," said Hassen Al-Shawaf, senior in business and member of the Illinois Student Senate and Tuition Policy Advisory Committee.
Fiancee rallies to free alum
11:38 PM 2/14/2005 — The fiancee of a University alumnus and American citizen imprisoned in China for more than two years was in Champaign on Monday as part of her effort to have him freed.
During a midday rally outside the Illini Union, Yeong-Ching Foo and other supporters, including some University faculty, gave speeches in support of freeing Foo's fiancee Charles Lee.
LGBT office expands
11:36 PM 2/14/2005 — University commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students has gotten stronger during this school year with the hiring of a full-time director and graduate assistant for the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns. New Director Curt McKay, hired last fall, said he is working full time to provide services to students and faculty on campus.
UI graduate student performs at Apollo

C-U Health Dept. focuses on AIDS in African American community
11:42 PM 2/14/2005 — The Champaign-Urbana Health Department, along with the Greater Community AIDS Project, is taking measures to help educate and inform the African-American community about HIV/AIDS. Worldwide, 39.4 million people were living with HIV/AIDS and more than 4.9 million were infected with HIV in 2004 alone, according to estimates from the December 2004 UNAIDS/WHO AIDS epidemic update.

Debate over origins of universe comes to UI
11:44 PM 2/14/2005 — Nearly 80 years after the famous Scopes "monkey" trial, the debate between Darwinist evolution and Judeo-Christian creationism continued at the University of Illinois - but with a new twist. A recent model for the origins of the universe and mankind, called "Intelligent Design," attempts to combine scientific method with the assertion that a supernatural agent was behind the creation of both the cosmos and terrestrial life.
Mayor candidates to appear at forum Tuesday
11:45 PM 2/14/2005 — The three candidates running for mayor of Urbana are set to appear at a candidate's forum at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The event is scheduled to be televised by WILL. The candidates are incumbent Tod Satterthwaite, who was elected mayor in 1993, Laurel Prussing, who has served as a state representative, a Champaign County Board member and Champaign County auditor, and Shirley Hursey, who has served on the Urbana Human Relations Commission.
UCC to consider rental registration program

The Council voted to study the issue further before taking final action. The program would require property owners to register their rental property with the city.
Bush cuts threaten program for poor students
12:06 AM 2/15/2005 — (U-WIRE) IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa's funding to prepare nearly 100 poverty-stricken middle- and high-school students for college, along with the state's funding for 10,000 such students, is slated to be eliminated under President Bush's recent budget proposal to Congress.
