Who is to blame here? Well, both the Bush administration and the American public are to blame. Shame on our government for lying to us over and over again, but shame on us for not holding them accountable. Clinton lied about cheating on his wife and the Republicans were up in arms to impeach him, but when Bush and company lie about things that actually matter like breaking international treaties and misleading the public about what is actually happening in the Guantanamo Bay prison, we have just uttered a collective "Oh well." Why do we just stand by and let the government do whatever they please without any repercussions for their misdeeds?
There is no better time than the present to start holding our government and military accountable. Surely most of the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay are terrorists and need to be held outside of society for the protection of the world's citizens. However, that doesn't mean that they are not human with the basic rights that all people deserve. We mustn't just stand by and accept the lies and empty apologies offered by the current administration. The deeds these terrorists and their comrades have committed are by all means completely reprehensible, but the prisoners do not deserve to be tortured, no matter how much they may hate America and our political policies.
