Locals help victims
12:06 AM 9/6/2005 — As victims of the hurricane across the nation are coping with the aftermath of the devastating disaster, people are being encouraged to reach into their pockets to donate to the cause. Charities and individuals in states nationwide are opening their doors to house victims.
Local residents organize car wash for Hurricane Katrina victims
12:08 AM 9/6/2005 — Candice Tillman does not personally know anyone who has fallen under hard times because of Hurricane Katrina, but when she watched the devastating effects and struggles of the victims to survive on the news, she decided she needed to act.
"I was just sitting there and watching the news, CNN, MSNBC, and saw the images and just started feeling like I should do something about this," Tillman said.
Utah, Central Mich. names get OK from NCAA
12:09 AM 9/6/2005 — On Friday the NCAA removed two more schools from its list of those with "hostile and abusive" American Indian mascots, logos and nicknames.
The NCAA announced that the University of Utah and Central Michigan University will no longer be prohibited from using their logos and nicknames at NCAA Championship events, and will be allowed to host those events after the ruling takes effect Feb.
Trustees to vote on eighth Chief guideline
12:09 AM 9/6/2005 — The University of Illinois' Board of Trustees added two new items to its monthly meeting agenda Friday. One of those items is a proposal for an $11 million conference center on the south end of campus. The other item deals with Chief Illiniwek. Item 8b adds an eighth guideline to the Board's "Consensus Resolution" policy regarding the debate over the Chief.
International linguists meet at University for conference
12:14 AM 9/6/2005 — The University hosted the tenth International Conference on the History of Language Sciences this weekend.
Linguists from over 20 nations visited the University to attend the conference which was held September 1-5. The conference, which is held every three years, consisted of presentations from linguists from various countries such as Brazil, China, France, Finland, Japan and Poland.
