Locals rally for immigration reform
1:08 AM 10/17/2005 — A crowd of almost 100 University students and local residents rallied together in front of U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson's Champaign (R-IL) office Friday afternoon determined to be heard.
With their voices united in protest and hope, the group shouted slogans such as "immigration built this nation" and "the people united will never be divided" as they waved brightly colored poster signs echoing similar messages.
U of I appeals NCAA ruling
1:02 AM 10/17/2005 — llinois is fighting its inclusion on the NCAA's list of schools with "hostile and abusive" American Indian mascots, logos and nicknames, sending the NCAA a lengthy appeal Friday. The appeal calls for the NCAA to acknowledge the importance of the school's self-determination as the University of Illinois Board of Trustees works toward a consensus resolution regarding the University's Chief Illiniwek symbol and "Illini" and "Fighting Illini" nicknames.
Homecoming week begins with 5K run

Homecoming Week is underway, and it started off strong Sunday with the Illini Stride Homecoming 5K Run/Walk and Kids' Fun Run at 11 a.m. at Hessel Park in Champaign. The annual event was sponsored by Student Alumni Ambassadors and the University's Alumni Association, and marked the kickoff for "Ignite My Illini" Homecoming Week.
Krannert Center gives "A Taste of the Arts"
1:42 AM 10/17/2005 — The Krannert Center's annual "A Taste of the Arts" event presented a variety of art, performances and dances Saturday from 12-4 p.m. in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts' lobby.
The community outreach department of the Krannert Center Student Association organized the event.
Project encourages student involvement
1:33 AM 10/17/2005 — The Tunnel Vision project held its ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning, dedicating the link connecting the Undergraduate Library and the Main Library to the students and faculty members who contributed to the project. "The project represented an enormous effort to pull together various talents from across the campus," Chancellor Richard Herman said after the ceremony.
Romanian opera brought to campus
1:29 AM 10/17/2005 — With Romanian dignitaries in attendance and only two full rehearsals completed, the University's Sinfonia da Camera production company presented the American premiere of George Enescu's opera, "Oedipe," in a semi-staged performance Saturday evening. Sponsored by the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and the College of Fine and Applied Arts, the opera was performed in the Foellinger Great Hall in the Krannert Center.

Locals walk in support of Down Syndrome
1:01 AM 10/17/2005 — The Down Syndrome Network for Champaign County held its first Buddy Walk this Saturday in Crystal Lake Park. Nearly 300 participants walked the mile-long path, raising money and awareness for Down syndrome.
"I am very pleased with the outcome today," said Kathleen Williams-Hjort, president of the Down Syndrome Network.
Students help clean park
1:43 AM 10/17/2005 — In an effort to help clean up Allerton Park, University students from Volunteer Illini Projects volunteered to improve park maintenance on Make a Difference Workday Saturday. This is the Volunteer Illini Projects' environmental division's third year participating in this event.

1:13 AM 10/17/2005 — Store employees and managers cheered as Champaign Mayor Gerald Schweighart, cut through a thick, red ribbon Saturday morning, signifying the grand opening of Market Place Mall's latest addition: the Courtyard. "I'm always glad when the mall adds stores," Schweighart said.
Police blotter
1:30 AM 10/17/2005 — Champaign Two unknown suspects at the 800 block of Fifth Street battered a 22-year-old Danville man early Saturday morning. According to a police report, a 21-year-old woman placed her purse on the ground and went to assist the man. Her purse, containing a cellular phone and a digital camera, was stolen.
