Illiniwek appeal denied
2:26 AM 11/14/2005 — Chief Illiniwek is hostile and abusive despite the University's "good intentions and best efforts," the NCAA announced Friday as it denied Illinois' appeal of its inclusion in a policy banning American Indian imagery from postseason contests.
Four weeks after receiving Illinois' appeal, the NCAA staff review committee changed its tune of the past few months, stating the names "Illini" and "Fighting Illini" are not American Indian-based and therefore do not create a "hostile and abusive" environment on campus.
Immigrant reforms discussed
1:50 AM 11/14/2005 — University and community members gathered Nov. 11 at the College of Law's auditorium for panel discussion entitled, "Undocumented Students and Higher Education: The Implications of Illinois House Bill 60 on the University of Illinois." Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed House Bill 60 into law May 18, 2003 allowing undocumented students to enroll in Illinois colleges and universities at in-state tuition rates.
Local chemist indicted in BALCO case
2:12 PM 4/8/2007 — A Champaign chemist was indicted Nov. 3 in connection with the BALCO steroid investigation in Northern California, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office in the Northern District of California. Patrick Arnold, 39, was charged with conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids and two other counts involving misbranding and delivery of the steroids, according to the statement.
Radio station begins broadcast
1:45 AM 11/14/2005 — The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center and the Prometheus Radio Project came together last weekend to build Urbana's new community radio station from the ground up.
The groups worked together, along with about 100 volunteers, building the radio station inside the Urbana Post Office.
Spirit of generosity alive in local fire department
1:49 AM 11/14/2005 — Local fire departments from Urbana and Danville drove a pickup truck loaded with home improvement tools to New Orleans last Tuesday. The firefighters drove for more than 12 hours and stayed only 3, but they gave the 6 generators, 12 saws and 6 drills to the vice president of the New Orleans fire troop.

Carle hospital's new helicopter provides more room, speedy aid
1:18 AM 11/14/2005 — AirLife, an air medical transport service provided by Carle Foundation Hospital and ARCH Air Medical Services, Inc., has acquired a new helicopter to replace its old one. The old helicopter was bigger than other medical helicopters but still had limited patient access.

1:41 AM 11/14/2005 — Champaign An unknown suspect ordered a 12-inch chicken parmesan sandwich with cheese, grabbed the sandwich and left without paying at Subway Sandwiches, 1401 S. Neil St. on Saturday evening. No arrests had been made at the time of the report. A 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were issued tickets for minors in possession of alcohol early Saturday morning at the 100 block of East Green Street.
