Increase in tuition coming
11:51 PM 3/13/2006 — Tuition could be increasing $700 for students at the Urbana-Champaign campus starting July 1, 2006, according to a document obtained by The Daily Illini. The same document also revealed tuition increases of $1,000 at the Springfield campus and $600 at the Chicago campus for the 2006-2007 academic year.
GRE held until 2007 to inhibit cheating
11:51 PM 3/13/2006 — The Educational Testing Service has postponed the introduction of their revised Graduate Record Examination General Test, better known as the GRE, until Fall 2007 in order to ensure that enough testing facilities are available to students. "Because we are moving to an Internet-based test, we need to make absolutely sure that we have enough seats for testees," said David Payne, executive director of the GRE.
New Madrid fault line could cause devastation
11:53 PM 3/13/2006 — The New Madrid fault line doesn't have the notoriety of the San Andreas in California, but it could cause billions of dollars in damage to a region not known for its seismic activity. This was the warning presented by Amr Elnashai and Jerome Hajjar, director and deputy director, respectively, of the Mid-America Earthquake Center located in the Newman Civil Engineering Lab, as they appeared Sunday night on "It Could Happen Tomorrow," a new series on the Weather Channel.
Women holding back in math
11:35 PM 3/13/2006 — Girls tend to earn better grades in math than boys during elementary school, yet women typically do not score higher on standardized testing than men or pursue mathematics degrees, according to a new study in the Developmental Psychology journal. "Boys pretty consistently outscore girls in math and science," said Ed Colby, spokesman for ACT.
School of Social Work commemorates 60 years
11:35 PM 3/13/2006 — The University School of Social Work celebrated its 60th anniversary this weekend with a series of events commemorating the school's history and accomplishments. The school, exclusively a graduate and Ph. D. program, was first approved as a professional degree program at the University in 1945.

10:51 AM 4/3/2007 — Howling winds and damaging hail from a Springfield tornado could be heard, but not seen, by two University of Illinois at Springfield students as they spent Sunday night hunched in an Olive Garden kitchen. Graduate student Jenny Spraggs, undergraduate Mary Sexton and the other patrons of the restaurant took cover after Sexton's husband called her cell phone to warn them of the coming danger.
Inner Voices talk sex
11:49 PM 3/13/2006 — No one can deny it. Love, sex and hook-ups are some of the biggest issues in a college student's life. Over the weekend a student group tackled these issues and more through theatre and discussion and and will continue to do so this week. Inner Voices: Social Issues Theatre addressed the issue of college relationships through their presentation "Get a Clue: A candid and lively look at love, lust, intrigue and allure," last Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Armory Free Theatre.
