Severe storms hit CU

As tornado sirens sounded and heavy rains began to fall just after 7 p.m. Sunday evening, the METCAD Emergency Alert System warned viewers to "take cover to save your life."
No injuries were reported as of publication Sunday, but residents throughout Champaign County reported power outages, network outages, wind damage and fallen branches.
Unofficial 'inventor' removed from board
11:50 PM 4/2/2006 — Scott Cochrane, the owner of several campus bars and the man credited with inventing Unofficial St. Patrick's Day, was removed from the Champaign liquor advisory commission by Mayor Gerald Schweighart on March 27. Schweighart said he made the decision because Cochrane was unwilling to help stop the binge drinking associated with Unofficial.
SIU's admissions under review
11:48 PM 4/2/2006 — Universities are making graduate fellowships, assistantships and other scholarship programs intended for minorities available to non-minority students because of heightened pressure from Washington to give equal consideration to all students. The Center for Equal Opportunity filed a complaint with the Department of Justice against the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale for programs allegedly discriminating against men and non-minorities.

Union hosts first Edible Book Fest
10:35 PM 4/2/2006 — The first annual Champaign-Urbana Edible Book Festival is today at the Union in room 407 at 9:00 a.m. The festival, sponsored by the University library, will display the works of participants. These works must be edible and have a connection to books, whether it is a reference to a title, a play on words or the likeness of a book.

10:44 PM 4/2/2006 — The Illini Conservative Union held a free speech funeral at noon on the Quad and in front of the Daily Illini building at 5 p.m. Friday, protesting the termination of former Daily Illini editor in chief Acton Gorton. Leo Buchignani, president of the Illini Conservative Union and senior in Communications, said the protest was to raise awareness because people didn't know about Gorton's termination and the arbitrary issues surrounding it.

Police
12:00 AM 4/3/2006 — Champaign Seven girls and six boys were arrested for criminal damage to property and violating curfew at Berean Bookstore, 2023 N. Prospect Avenue early Sunday. According to a police report, the juveniles were acting disorderly and two windows of the store were broken.
