University student hospitalized for meningitis
1:18 AM 10/17/2006 — University of Illinois authorities say a University student has been hospitalized for treatment of bacterial meningitis. The University declined to identify the student, saying only that he or she was admitted Thursday to a hospital in Evanston. University spokeswoman Robin Kaler said officials have been in touch with people who may have been in close contact with the student at campus.

Greek party causes turmoil across campus
1:29 AM 10/17/2006 — A recent exchange between the University chapters of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity has sparked a controversy because it played on ethnic stereotypes of Latinos. The exchange, which happened Oct. 5, had a "fiesta" theme, said Cassie Arner, alumnae adviser of the sorority.
MTD, UI to work to reduce emissions
11:35 PM 10/16/2006 — The University and the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District are working together to research the effects of equipment that would reduce the amount of harmful emissions from MTD's buses.
The University received a federal grant of $50,000 to help fund a project that will revamp four MTD buses to meet new Environmental Protection Agency standards.
Quake clean-up continues
11:33 PM 10/16/2006 — KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii - Authorities restored electricity and began to clear away boulders Monday after the strongest earthquake to hit the Hawaiian islands in over two decades.
Twenty-four hours after Sunday's 6.7-magnitude quake, there were no reports of any deaths or serious injuries, and there were few signs of major damage.
ON-AIR: Controversy surrounds junk food ban
7:29 PM 10/16/2006 — Governor Rod Blagojevich's recent push for a Junk food ban in Illinois elementry and middle schools was approved by the Joint Committe on Adminstrative Rules. The ban would halt soda, chips and candy in veding machines. Public relations coordinater for the Urbana School District Kathy Wallig says junk food and vending machines have already been removed several years ago.

Junk food banned in Illinois elementary, middle schools
11:37 PM 10/16/2006 — The Illinois Joint Committee on Administrative Rules approved a state-wide junk food ban Oct. 10 with strong support from Gov. Rod Blagojevich. After research presented that students with healthier lives and diets have higher attendance rates, better behavior, and superior test scores, Blagojevich proposed the bill to ban junk food and soda in elementary and middle schools last November.
Campus robberies on the rise
11:37 PM 10/16/2006 — The 2005-06 academic year showed an increase in robberies and a decrease in aggravated battery and assaults, said a University Police Department press release. Campustown saw a 35 percent decrease in the number of aggravated assaults and batteries. In the previous academic year, the campus had 142 reported aggravated assaults and batteries.
Green Party gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney discusses platform at UI

Students no sooner get used to their current living situation and they have to begin deciding on their living situation for the upcoming school year. Director of leasing for Bankier Apartments Bobbi Winterbottom says that in the seven years she has been leasing apartments she has seen this time come earlier every year.
Urbana City Council talks on cell phone legislation, Philo Road improvement
11:39 PM 10/16/2006 — On Monday night, the Urbana City Council discussed possibilities for legislation that would penalize people who talk on their cell phones while driving. "The most important part is to find out, what's the focus," said Dennis Roberts, D-Ward 5. He questioned whether the law would be enforceable and also whether it would be independently enforced or simply tacked onto a different traffic violation.

11:41 PM 10/16/2006 — Champaign A 29-year-old woman reported criminal damage to her vehicle at the 2000 block of North Prospect Avenue late Saturday night. According to a police report, an unknown offender shot the woman's windshield 18 times with a BB gun. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
