University to end Chief performance
5:34 PM 2/16/2007 — Chief Illiniwek will make his last appearance at a University athletic event on Feb. 21, the last men's basketball game of the season at Assembly Hall.
According to a University press release, the University will now be able to host postseason National Collegiate Athletics Association championship events because of this decision, as stipulated in a letter sent by Bernard Franklin, senior vice president for governance, membership, education and research services of the NCAA, to the University on Feb. 15.

Champaign proposes Unofficial legislation
12:27 AM 2/16/2007 — The Champaign City Council supported two proposals Thursday night, both of which could potentially dull the effects of Unofficial St. Patrick's Day.
The first proposal, which the council backed 7-1, will expand the authority of Mayor Gerald Schweighart and increase his powers as liquor commissioner.

Tolerance editorial at University High stirs controversy
12:31 AM 2/16/2007 — An editorial about tolerance published Wednesday, Feb. 7, on The Online Gargoyle student forum at the University Laboratory High School elicited more than 150 comments before the open online forum was closed.
The editorial, written by Gargoyle's senior editors, acknowledged University High is not a perfect place and has some controversies - most recently, the Minority Students Advocacy (MSA) program because it limited minorities to blacks, Indians and Hispanics, and the two co-leaders were being paid $7 per hour by the University budget designated for student workers.

C-U may replace water supplier
12:32 AM 2/16/2007 — Urbana and Champaign split the cost of water consulting services to explore potential government ownership of the water supply-a move that Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing said could improve the quality and lower the cost of water in the two cities.
Currently, the water supply in both cities is owned by Illinois American Water, a subsidiary of RWE AG, a German based utilities supplier.

12:41 AM 2/16/2007 — PEORIA, Ill. - Earlier nighttime curfews, passenger limits and other new restrictions proposed for teen drivers in Illinois could significantly reduce traffic crashes, the No. 1 killer of U.S. teens, according to a new study released Thursday.
States with the nation's toughest teen driving laws have more than a third fewer crashes causing death or injury involving 16-year-old drivers, according to the study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
