Students rally in support of the Chief
8:16 PM 2/19/2007 — Students clad in Chief Illiniwek attire showed their support Monday night, rallying on the Quad with the hope of preventing the University symbol from being retired.
The rally, first introduced last week as a Facebook event, drew about 200 students. A few words in support of the Chief were offered by Paul Schmitt, sophomore in LAS and external vice president for Students for Chief Illiniwek; Dan Maloney, graduate student and portrayer of the Chief; and Tim Schwaegler, freshman in LAS who helped organize the event.

C-U community deals with Chief Illiniwek's departure
11:39 PM 2/18/2007 — Twice Charles Craft's "YO CHIEF" license plate has been vandalized. Once it was stolen and Craft replaced it. Another time it was bent to face the ground and had to be repaired.
Now that the University's Board of Trustees effectively retired Chief Illiniwek and his halftime performance, Craft, 70, has resolved to build a "bigger, better" sign to sit on his front yard knoll, facing the intersection of Florida Avenue and Race Street alongside his license plate.

Court denies case of Chief portrayers
11:43 PM 2/18/2007 — Judge Michael Jones decided late Friday morning he would not grant Chief portrayers Dan Maloney, graduate student, and Logan Ponce, sophomore in Engineering, a temporary restraining order against the University's Board of Trustees and the NCAA.
The temporary restraining order, if granted, would have stopped the University from making the decision to retire the Chief.

But controversy over the issue has also become a common experience for University students since anti-Chief protests occurred on campus in 1989.

C-U MTD adapts to harsh winter road conditions
11:00 PM 2/18/2007 — The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit district adapted to winter weather to ensure the smooth operation of buses and the safety of students.
Tom Costello, assistant managing director at C-U MTD, said that the snowstorm last week led the buses to alter their routes, when early-morning patrols of the streets deemed some routes unsafe.

Cities address flooding from melting snow
6:05 PM 2/19/2007 — The City of Urbana Public Works department is once again busy in keeping the streets and sidewalks hazardous-free for pedestrians and vehicles. Only this time, they're dealing with flooding. Now that the temperatures are rising and snow is melting, the Urbana Public Works department is pushing all the snow onto the curb, despite protests from residents.
