Trustee questions Chief decision
10:40 PM 2/25/2007 — Questions remain surrounding the retirement of Chief Illiniwek as the official symbol of the University more than a week after its announcement via press release on Feb. 16.
A University trustee has now said the Chief is still the official symbol because the entire Board of Trustees did not make the decision to retire the tradition.

Illiniwek supporters to hold vigil tonight
3:17 PM 2/26/2007 — Students for Chief Illiniwek will be holding a candlelight vigil tonight at the President's Mansion, 711 W. Florida Ave, at 8 p.m.
According to the group's Web site, the event is being held to raise awareness for the Chief. Students for Chief Illiniwek is also collecting signatures this week for a petition to add a referendum question to this month's student election ballot that would reverse the Board of Trustee's decision to retire the Chief.

ISS aims to increase student involvement

Program designed to aid black freshmen

This year, the University is testing a pilot program designed to get black students more involved on campus.
The program, 100 Strong, is run by the African American Cultural Center. The program attempts to get black freshmen more involved in campus life by offering mentorship opportunities and providing a conduit for them to find out about various activities and events on campus.

Workshop to focus on pedestrian safety

Rice asks Congress not to meddle with Bush's Iraq plan

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged the Democratic-controlled Congress not to interfere in the conduct of the Iraq war and suggested President Bush would defy troop withdrawal legislation.
But Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said lawmakers would step up efforts to force Bush to change course.

Contractor wants $11 million from state for breaking deal
4:07 PM 2/26/2007 — SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A Chicago contractor accused of improper expense reimbursements wants $10.9 million from the state, saying Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration reneged on paying the fired company for work it already had performed.
Illinois Property Asset Management's $30 million deal was canceled after an audit found that the state Department of Central Management Services had reimbursed IPAM for expenses such as liquor and parking at a Chicago Bulls game.
