Ceremony celebrates tradition, ends Black History Month
3:29 PM 2/28/2007 — A month of exploring black history and culture draws to a close tonight with "Our Soul: The Heart of Creativity" at 7 p.m. in the Illini Union Ballroom, presented by the African American Cultural Center's Soul Premier.
"The purpose of Black History Month is to encourage people to remember the contributions of African-Americans," said Nameka Bates, assistant director at the Center.

Champaign murders jump to 12 in 2006
3:19 PM 2/28/2007 — Murders in the first degree quadrupled in Champaign during 2006, according to a press release issued by the Champaign Police Department Wednesday morning.
"We usually don't have a lot of homicides," said Gary Spear, Champaign police crime analyst "This was a little out of the ordinary for us.

Champaign Police Department returns abducted middle school student
5:06 PM 2/28/2007 — A 15-year-old male student was recovered by Champaign Police this morning after he was abducted from the grounds of Edison Middle School, 306 W. Green St.
The abduction took place around 7 a.m., according to a press release issued by the city of Champaign.

New charges double bail for teacher
3:30 PM 2/28/2007 — Former Urbana teacher Jon White was arraigned yesterday at the Champaign County Courthouse on charges of predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
The 35-year-old is accused of molesting nine students in his second-grade classroom at Thomas Paine Elementary School, 1801 Cherry Hill Dr.

Mayor exercises new emergency powers for Unofficial Saint Patrick's Day
3:22 PM 2/28/2007 — This Friday marks the celebration of Unofficial Saint Patrick's Day. The event is often considered one of the most controversial on campus.
Due to policies recently enacted by Chancellor Richard Herman, showing up to class intoxicated or disrupting class in any way on Unofficial will now constitute grounds for dismissal from the University.

Daley reelected, could become longest serving mayor
3:28 PM 2/28/2007 — CHICAGO (AP) - If Mayor Richard M. Daley surpasses his legendary father and become Chicago's longest-serving mayor in a few years, he's not worried about his legacy or who might play him in the movie.
"Once you start worrying about legacies, you start making decisions to make your legacy," Daley said after trouncing two little-known challengers to win a sixth term Tuesday.

3:17 PM 2/28/2007 — SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Under siege from angry customers and lawmakers Tuesday, power company Ameren promised to provide at least some financial relief to consumers socked with huge electric bills since a rate increase took effect in January.
Ameren President Scott Cisel, speaking at a special Illinois House hearing where customers recounted bill horror stories, detailed an eight-point plan that included one-time rebates and new payment options.

Sprinklers installed at ISR for fire safety
11:08 PM 2/27/2007 — The University Housing Department, in an effort to continuously protect students from fire hazards, finished installing new sprinkler systems and fire alarms into the Illinois Street Residence Halls. These new fire safety precautions, connected to a large and powerful computing system, are the halfway point for a continuous project by the department to update fire detection systems.

University hosts pedestrian safety workshop

These and other factors have prompted the University to host a pedestrian safety workshop.

Pepsi, Coca-Cola will bid to be Illinois' soda supplier
11:09 PM 2/27/2007 — SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - There's a cola competition going on in Springfield.
Pepsi and Coca-Cola want to be the sole beverage supplier to more than 2,300 vending machines on state property, the Illinois State Fair and the University of Illinois.
Officials had hoped more companies would bid on the chance to be the state government's sole soda supplier, but Illinois Revenue Department spokesman Mike Klemens says they are satisfied with two bidders.

Water plant proposal receives support
11:11 PM 2/27/2007 — The Champaign City Council unanimously supported a proposal by the Illinois American Water Company Tuesday night in which the company plans to build a $51 million water treatment plant to ensure future water needs are met in Champaign County.
The plant, which is set to begin construction sometime after June 2007, will have an initial capacity of 15 million gallons per day, and will be capable of being expanded to as much as 20 million gallons per day.

Teachers put iPod to work

In more and more college classrooms across the country, it's taking on yet another role: teaching.
At Tidewater Community College in Virginia, for example, associate professor Kathy O'Connor recently received an $11,000 grant to use iPods in her Spanish classes.

The University has joined the Open Content Alliance, which is a project of the Internet Archive, an organization committed to building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts.

Illinois Student Senate treasurer resigns

"Steve is an engineering student and he's extremely busy," Ruzic said. "He decided that it would be best to step down.
