Illinois receives No. 12 seed in NCAA tournament
9:20 PM 3/11/2007 — Illinois basketball can breathe a sigh of relief now that the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee has granted the program a bid in the Midwest Region. With a No. 12 seed, the Illini will face No. 5 Virginia Tech on Friday in Columbus, Ohio.
Intriguing matchups may await the Illinois team if it goes far enough in the tournament.

Women of Color hosts Mae Jemison
10:54 PM 3/8/2007 — In 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison became the first black woman to enter space. Today, she will speak on being a minority woman in the field of science at the Eighteenth Annual Women of Color Conference.
The conference will be held from Mar. 9 to Mar. 11, celebrating the empowerment of minority women, and educating the public on the significance of uplifting, uniting and empowering women of color.

Bill may ban smoking in cars with children
10:56 PM 3/8/2007 — Inspired by an experience in his local grocery store parking lot, Rep. Mike Boland, D-East Moline, has introduced a bill that would prohibit smokers from lighting up in their car if children under the age of eight are also riding in it.
"The windows on a car were rolled up, and an adult in the car was puffing away on a cigarette, and a cloud of smoke hanging in the air," Boland said.

State budgets provide aid for community colleges

Bush-visit protestors injured in Brazil
10:58 PM 3/8/2007 — SAO PAULO, Brazil - Police clashed Thursday with students, environmentalists and left-leaning Brazilians protesting a visit by President Bush and his push for an ethanol energy alliance with Latin America's largest nation.
Riot police fired tear gas at protesters in Sao Paulo after more than 6,000 people held a largely peaceful march, sending hundreds of demonstrators fleeing and ducking into businesses to avoid the gas.
