9/11 mastermind confesses in Guantanamo hearing, according to hearing transcripts
11:26 PM 3/14/2007 — WASHINGTON - Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, confessed to that attack and a string of others during a military hearing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to a transcript released Wednesday by the Pentagon.
Mohammed claimed responsibility for planning, financing, and training others for bombings ranging from the 1993 attack at the World Trade Center to the attempt by would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives hidden in his shoes.

Board's vote supports end to Chief dance
11:39 AM 3/14/2007 — The University Board of Trustees ratified the Feb. 16 decision to retire the Chief Illiniwek tradition Tuesday morning, a move that is believed to be the final step in the elimination of the University's former symbol.
An amended version of the resolution proposing board ratification of Chairman Lawrence Eppley's decision to retire the tradition received only one "no" vote.

Rise in student fees passed for Fall 2007

Destructive Urbana fire may have been intentional
4:39 PM 3/14/2007 — Fire officials and the Champaign County Sheriff's Department are investigating a fire that appeared to have been set intentionally Tuesday morning at an Urbana home.
The house, 2401 E. Elm St., suffered extensive damage but was unoccupied at the time because it was being renovated.

The Board of trustees met yesterday morning to discuss whether the February 16th decision to rid Chief Illiniwek would hold.
The motion was carried with Trustee David V. Dorris as the only opposing member.
Trustee Robert Sperling says that although he's sad to see the chief go, he's ready to move on from the issue.

Class plans barcrawl to raise awareness of sexual assault

Kyle Mosley, senior in Communications and an Illini Media employee, is one of the teaching assistants of the class that planned the Sexual Assault Awareness Bar Crawl that will take place on Wednesday night.

Animal euthanasia on the decline

About 8 to 12 million animals entered shelters nationwide in 2005, and among them about 5 to 9 million were euthanized. But within two years, euthanasia has dropped 12% in the Chicago area.

Green plates could be required for sex offenders in Wisconsin
4:13 PM 3/14/2007 — MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin child sex offenders would have to display distinctive bright green license plates on their cars under a proposed bill announced Monday.
The bill, drafted by State Rep. Joel Kleefisch, R-Oconomowoc, Wisc., states that those convicted of first and second-degree child assault would be required to purchase bright green license plates for vehicles registered under their name.
