Four armed robberies hit campus overnight
12:07 PM 4/1/2007 — Four armed robberies took place on campus between midnight and 2:40 a.m. this morning. According to a mass e-mail sent by University Police Chief Krystal Fitzpatrick, the crimes took place at the following locations: in Illini Grove, the natural area located at the northwest corner of Lincoln and Pennsylvania avenues; at Busey Avenue and Nevada Street in Urbana; at Wright and White streets in Champaign; and at Locust and Chalmers streets in Champaign.

Illinois Senate approves statewide smoking ban
12:35 PM 3/31/2007 — SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - All restaurants and bars across Illinois would have to go smoke-free under legislation approved Thursday by the state Senate.
The measure would replace the patchwork of local smoking ordinances across Illinois with a single policy meant to protect people from secondhand smoke in the workplace.

Carle Hospital partners with CUMTD
1:14 PM 3/31/2007 — A "memorandum of understanding" - a kind of formal agreement - was established between the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District and Carle Hospital at the MTD board meeting Wednesday, said Tom Costello, assistant managing director for the MTD.
In the event of a large-scale local disaster, some patients can now be transported to the MTD's main bus warehouse and garage in Urbana for temporary care.

Coral reefs in toxic peril
12:19 AM 3/30/2007 — Like a piece of chalk dissolving in vinegar, marine life with hard shells, like shellfish, and coral reefs are in danger of being dissolved by increasing acidity in the oceans due to rising carbon dioxide levels.
Research conducted by Atul Jain, professor of atmospheric science at the University, Ken Caldeira, Carnegie Institution scientist, and graduate student Long Cao found that marine animals may be in danger.
