University retains Chief logo rights
1:34 AM 4/2/2007 — On Friday, the University and College Licensing Company officially announced the decision to retain the rights to the Chief Illiniwek logo.
The announcement came less than one month after the Board of Trustees' March 13 meeting in which the retirement of the Chief mascot was ratified.

State senate passes Smoke Free Act banning tobacco use in bars
4:00 PM 4/2/2007 — The Illinois State Senate passed a bill 34-23 Thursday known as the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which would require all restaurants and bars in Illinois to ban smoking inside their facilities.
Champaign and Urbana are already under such regulations - Urbana since August 2006 and Champaign since January 2007 - and Champaign Mayor Gerald Schweighart says the bill, if signed into law, will not affect the cities' policies.

Stores worry about memorabilia sales

Every year in mid-May students pack up their belongings and bid farewell to their friends, sometimes just for a few months and sometimes for much longer.
The goodbye is coming a little sooner for a very familiar face on campus, and local business owners will be left to cope with the loss.

Armed robberies occur on campus

According to a mass e-mail sent to students by University Police Chief Krystal Fitzpatrick, two men committed a total of four armed robberies between midnight and 2:40 a.

Tsunami devastates western Solomon Islands
4:08 PM 4/2/2007 — HONIARA, Solomon Islands (AP) - Tsunami waves churned by an undersea earthquake crashed ashore in the Solomon Islands on Monday, wiping away entire villages and triggering alerts from Australia to Hawaii, officials said. At least 13 people were killed, and the prime minister warned that the toll would likely grow.

Tribune accepts $8.2B buyout offer from Zell, plans to sell Cubs
12:48 PM 4/2/2007 — CHICAGO (AP) - Tribune Co. has accepted a buyout offer from real estate investor Sam Zell in a deal valued at about $8.2 billion and plans to sell the Chicago Cubs at the end of this season, the media company said Monday.
The owner of the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and various other newspapers and TV stations spent six months soliciting bids and reviewing offers.

2 people killed in shooting on University of Washington campus in Seattle
4:07 PM 4/2/2007 — SEATTLE (AP) - Two people were shot to death Monday morning inside the University of Washington's architecture building, university police said.
Firefighters found the victims while responding to reports of gunfire in Gould Hall around 9 a.m., Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said.

Miss Asian pageant showcases 'grace, talent, beauty, charisma'
2:09 AM 4/2/2007 — Described as a "celebration of the grace, beauty, talent and charisma of Asian American women," the fourth annual Miss Asian UIUC pageant took place Friday night.
Hosted by the Taiwan Intercultural Association at Foellinger Auditorium, the pageant showcased nine contestants from various Asian American student organizations.

PAR plans to close, renovate cramped dining area
11:29 PM 4/1/2007 — The PAR dining hall will close for the 2007-2008 school year in an attempt to upgrade and renovate the dining area. PAR has been open since September 1962 and at the time was built for only a few hundred people. Now, in 2007, there are more students in the PAR/FAR dining area then ever before and due to the cramped entrance and the constant jam of lines, more room is necessary.

University Professor initiates Spanish Civil War-era exhibition
11:16 PM 4/1/2007 — University Art History Professor Jordana Mendelson initiated a project that makes historical documents from the Spanish Civil War-era more accessible to the public and scholars.
The exhibition focuses on the presence of artists in magazines, posters and works of artists during the Spanish Civil War.
