11:52 PM 4/1/2007 — As we enjoyed a warm, spring weekend in Champaign-Urbana, things were also heating up in the Illinois General Assembly. On Friday, the State Senate passed a statewide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants. The legislation will now go before the House for consideration.

Remembering the fallen in the Iraqi war zone
11:53 PM 4/1/2007 — If you watched the news a couple of weeks ago, then you know that Jan. 20 was a particularly bloody day for U.S. forces in Iraq. Unfortunately, the wounds inflicted reached my battalion. The helicopter that crashed on that Saturday belonged to us, and its loss has been particularly hard on our unit.

Sex changes, alimony, and the true meaning of progress
11:55 PM 4/1/2007 — The media often romanticizes the gay community as a decadent subculture to which most of us cannot relate, but it's a cakewalk in contrast to the sideshow status of transgender people.
Rather than treat transsexuals as ordinary people who simply do not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth, we often feel compelled to focus on the tragic or comedic to help us navigate through the awkwardness.
