Over $60,000 of state money was released in the form of grants for two local projects that will see intersections in Urbana upgraded and a social service center in Champaign remodeled.

The city of Urbana is set to receive $11,250 of state grant money to upgrade six intersections to include countdown technology and audible pedestrian signals.

The Family Service of Champaign County will also receive $50,000 for improvements to upgrade the restrooms in their facility to make them handicapped accessible.

"The funds will be used to remodel the four restrooms in our facility to make them handicapped accessible," said Sheryl Bautch, executive director of Family Service of Champaign County, in the press release. "Two of the four restrooms are in such poor condition and so inaccessible that we have not been able to use them at all for several years."

State Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-Urbana, took credit for securing the funding.

"I have been working diligently over the last few years to bring money back to my district," said Jakobsson, in the press release.
