Champaign Mayor Gerald Schweighart has suspended the liquor licenses of Clybourne, 706 S. Sixth St., and Bar Louie, 510 E. John St., citing license violations.

According to a press release from the City of Champaign, Cylbourne's license will be suspended for two days, from April 7 to 8 for serving alcohol to minors and announcing the presence of police to warn other minors. They also violated the Happy Hour Law.

The owner must pay a $500 fine and an additional fine of $1000, and a second two-day suspension will be waived pending the completion of additional staff training and the installation of equipment that will electronically document the use of false identification by patrons.

According to Paul Berg, Champaign Acting Deputy Liquor Commissioner, suspensions are not rare.

"It's typical for there to be 10 to 15 a year for the number of licenses that have a suspension," Berg said.

Bar Louie is currently serving an emergency seven-day suspension for exceeding the mandated 40 percent limit on alcohol sales.

"Sixty percent of their sales have to be for food service. ... Their reports indicated that they had been over that amount," Berg said.

The business' temporary suspension will end at the close of business on April 7.

Berg also added that Bar Louie did not respond to the information request in a timely manner.

A certified audit will be performed, and a hearing regarding Bar Louie's license will be continued on April 16.

"These suspensions are serious matters and future violations of a similar manner will not be tolerated," Schweighart said in the release. "I expect these businesses to follow the rules - period."
