Senators take offense to comments, but address MTD, election concerns

At last night's Illinois Student Senate meeting, the senate discussed that because of a conflict involving attendance at an engineering event, the seven senators that major in engineering cannot attend or vote in the elections; both events take place on Monday at 8 p.m. This is not likely to change because of time constraints.

"It's unfortunate that no one had the foresight to see that this was scheduled to eliminate the engineering vote," said Ryan Ruzic, president of the student senate and senior in LAS.

The Committee on Student Rights gave a presentation on various issues on campus including drinking, housing rules and dealing with police. The committee will take this presentation through the various dorms to educate students.

Raymond Morales, the self-titled "brain child" of the March KKK spray chalk incident spoke to the senate about his actions and his resulting experiences. However, his words alienated and attacked many listeners. He specifically attacked sophomore student senator Frank Calabrese, inferring that he was an ignorant political science major.

"He has genuine intentions, but he was very misguided about it," Calabrese said. "He offended the people he wanted to aid, and he ended up making the campus more hostile."

Calabrese is actually a history major.

Following Morales' address and subsequent questions, the senate unanimously passed a resolution encouraging the MTD bus company to allow Safe Rides to pick up students from bars and more off-campus locations. Next week they'll swear in new officers.

I encourage everyone to watch the actual meeting on Insight Cable Channel 7 on Mondays at 7pm to judge what transpired for yourself. Please recognize the fact that I was not even quoted while a post-meeting reaction was. (Continued…)

What the heck is this article even about? I've never seen such poor writing in a college newspaper.

Nobody wants to hear your side. Nobody cares why you wrote anything about the KKK, or what message you are trying to convey. If you had half a brain you would be spreading it in a constructive manner, not by making our campus an uglier place. (Continued…)

I would comment on the actual issue described in the article... if I had any clue what on earth this article was about. Did I somehow miss an earlier headline on this? What is this KKK incident all about, and what the heck does it have to do with student senators majoring in engineering not being allowed to vote?

Raymond, you have a perfect opportunity to clear things up right here. Of course nobody expects you to go into the detail that an hour program can afford, but what were your intentions? What exactly did you apologize about? It's a given that many people who read these comments will not hear your show or see the replay of the meeting; why not spread your side of the story right here and now? I'm genuinely curious, so please inform us!

This is the worst article ever written. There are like 3 issues presented, all of which this article explains nothing about.

Not only did I not feel alienated at the meeting, I felt that I learned something about this universities' disreputable historic link to the kkk, a link that is not only shameful, but somewhat explanatory in many students' derogatory actions and statements. (Continued…)
