"It brought more concern among students about safety on campus, especially since the (Virginia Tech) campus is about the same size as ours," he said.

Two incumbents, Foster triumph
2:17 AM 4/18/2007 — Thomas Bruno. Deborah Feinen and Karen Foster were elected to Champaign City Council Tuesday. Mayor Jerry Schweighart and Marci Dodds, who both ran unopposed, will also continue to serve on the council.
"It's reaffirmation that things we've done are appreciated by voters and (they) want us to continue those policies," Bruno said.

A chilling picture emerged Tuesday of Cho Seung-Hui - a 23-year-old senior majoring in English - a day after the bloodbath that left 33 people dead, including Cho, who killed himself as police closed in.

Chancellor responds to Virginia Tech tragedy in mass e-mail
12:50 PM 4/18/2007 — University Chancellor Richard Herman sent out a mass e-mail to students and faculty Wednesday morning to address the recent mass shooting of 32 students at Virginia Tech.
"The massacre of 32 students at Virginia Tech Monday has left us shocked and saddened," Herman wrote in the mass e-mail.

University police warn armed robbery suspects at large
5:07 PM 4/18/2007 — University police have yet to arrest either of the two suspects involved in a string of seven armed robberies that took place on campus over a 15-day span from March 30 to April 13. "No one has been apprehended for these crimes," said Lt. Roy Acree of the University Police.

Voter turnout doubles in local precincts
4:25 PM 4/18/2007 — Ten precincts more than doubled their voter turnout in the April 17 elections from four years ago, Champaign County Clerk, Mark Shelden said.
Champaign 2nd precinct had 625 voters compared to 260 in 2003. Champaign 34th and 28th had doubled as well. Shelden attributed this increase to city council and school board races.

1:11 PM 4/18/2007 — AUSTIN, Texas - Campus threats forced lock-downs and evacuations at universities and grade schools in seven states on Tuesday, a day after a Virginia Tech student's shooting rampage killed 33 people.
One threat in Louisiana directly mentioned the massacre in Virginia, while others were reports of suspicious activity in Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, North Dakota, South Dakota and Michigan.

Former Centennial student killed during Virginia Tech shootings
2:28 PM 4/18/2007 — Austin Cloyd, a former Centennial High School student, was among those killed during the shootings at Virginia Tech, The Associated Press reports. According to The News-Gazette, Cloyd attended Centennial during her freshman, sophomore and junior years before moving to Virginia with her family.
