Surgeons begin first major operation on conjoined twins
11:54 PM 6/7/2007 — CLEVELAND - Doctors began the first in a series of high-risk surgeries Wednesday to separate 3-year-old twin girls joined at the head.
Doctors hope to separate Tatiana and Anastasia Dogaru, who were born in Italy but are of Romanian descent, through several surgeries in about six months.

Odd Champaign weather could cause some damage yet
10:35 PM 6/7/2007 — Central Illinois had a relatively mild early tornado season. But Thursday, weather in the Champaign county area was abnormally active.
In just the first week on June, temperatures reached over 90 degrees, topping out at 92. But WILL Chief Meteorologist Ed Kieser said the heat wasn't the only thing odd about the weather.

Downtown Champaign to provide free wireless Internet
9:47 PM 6/5/2007 — The Champaign City Council voted 8-0 in favor of installing and maintaining a free public wireless system in Champaign's downtown area.
Pavlov Media, a local company with nationwide business, agreed to install the system on city-owned traffic signals for the use of the general public, free of charge.

Girl missing for one year found in couple's house, both arrested
12:46 PM 6/7/2007 — BLOOMFIELD, Conn. - Police looking for clues in the yearlong disappearance of a 15-year-old girl said they found her Wednesday, pale but alive, locked in a hidden room in a home owned by an acquaintance of her parents.
Bloomfield police went to the home Wednesday in nearby West Hartford to serve search warrants for DNA and other evidence and found the girl locked inside a tiny room hidden underneath a staircase and blocked from view by a dresser.

Chief portrayers' lawsuit dismissed by county judge
9:41 PM 6/6/2007 — URBANA, Ill. - A judge on Tuesday dismissed a pair of lawsuits that claimed the University of Illinois broke state law when it shelved its American Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek.
One of the lawsuits, filed by the two students who used to don the costumes at men's basketball and football games, had also accused the NCAA of coercing the university to drop Chief Illiniwek by imposing sanctions against its athletic teams.

"Girls Gone Wild" creator remains in Nevada jail after granted bail
9:07 PM 6/6/2007 — RENO, Nev. - "Girls Gone Wild" creator Joseph Francis, granted bail in a federal tax evasion case in Nevada, will remain in jail to avoid the possibility of being sent to Florida to be arrested on another charge, his lawyer said Tuesday.
"We had hoped he'd be out today," defense lawyer David Houston said.

Champaign edges Urbana in friendly blood drive competition
9:41 PM 6/6/2007 — Everybody's a winner in a blood drive competition.
Champaign was just the bigger winner.
In the fourth annual blood drive, ran by State Representative Namoi Jakobsson (D-Urbana) and Champaign Mayor Gerald Schweigart, 121 pints of blood was collected. The competiton pits the city of Urbana against the city of Champaign to see which community could donate the most pints of blood.
