Smoking ban repeal still controversial

Blagojevich signs rate relief package
12:51 PM 8/29/2007 — DU QUOIN, Ill. - Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Tuesday signed into law a $1 billion relief package aimed at soaring electric rates, ending a yearlong tug of war between the needs of consumers and power companies.
The package softens the blow consumers felt from rates that spiked at the beginning of the year, following a 10-year rate freeze.

Chicago teachers, schools reach tentative contract agreement

N.J. judge drops hazing charges in case of Greek pledge's death

Superior Court Judge Maria Sypek approved a request by Mercer County Prosecutor Joseph Bocchini Jr. to dismiss the aggravated hazing counts against Dean of Students Anthony Campbell and Ada Badgley, the university's director of Greek life.

Handguns found at Illinois school
12:30 AM 8/29/2007 — A central Illinois high school was locked down Tuesday after police received a tip about weapons, and six unloaded handguns were found in a locker, authorities said. Three students were arrested.
Police said they aren't sure what the teenagers suspected of bringing the guns to Pontiac High School had in mind - there was no ammunition and the guns were left in a locker as classes started eight days into the new school year.
