CHICAGO - Looks like school will start on time for the more than 430,000 students who attend Chicago's public schools.

Chicago Teachers Union President Marilyn Stewart says the teachers and the school district have reached a tentative contract agreement. Union leaders aren't releasing details of the deal until teachers get a look at the pact.

Mayor Richard Daley says the city is glad to have a deal, but he's disappointed they couldn't agree on extra time in the classroom. Daley says they'll continue discussions on that.

Stewart predicts teachers will approve the agreement, meaning classes will start on September 4th without a strike.

Chicago's teachers haven't gone on strike in 20 years.
