Study may lead to MTD contract renewal
11:08 PM 10/3/2007 — The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District is looking into renewing its service contract with the University before the current contract expires on August 19, 2008.
Negotiations will only begin after the completion of an ongoing study analyzing how MTD buses are moving people through campus, concentrating on where riders board and exit the buses.

San Diego landslide opens chasm in road
3:07 PM 10/4/2007 — SAN DIEGO - A landslide swept away a chunk of an upscale hilltop neighborhood Wednesday, destroying a home, damaging five others and opening up a 50-yard chasm in a four-lane road.
Forty-six homes in the La Jolla neighborhood were evacuated but no one was hurt in the collapse, which occurred the morning after city officials warned residents of four homes not to sleep in them because the land might give way.

Cargo plane crashes into part of Congo's capital, at least 25 killed
12:30 PM 10/4/2007 — KINSHASA, Congo (AP) _ A cargo plane crashed in a residential neighborhood near the airport in Congo's capital on Thursday, plowing into homes and killing at least 25 people, officials said.
Several destroyed houses near a market in Kinshasa's Kingasani neighborhood were ablaze, and smoke filled the sky, according to an Associated Press reporter on the scene.

Academy to fund, promote study of entrepreneurship

High school scores drop in twin cities
10:41 PM 10/3/2007 — The Illinois State Board of Education released the statewide averages of the Illinois Standards Achievement Test and the Prairie State Achievement Exam last week. The ISAT, taken by students in third through eighth grades, showed an overall improvement. However, the PSAE scores, taken by high school juniors, dropped to a new low.

Student senate supports parts of capital spending bill
10:27 PM 10/3/2007 — Illinois student senators voted to support parts of the state capital spending bill at their meeting Wednesday night. The bill was recently approved by the Illinois Senate and will come before the Illinois General Assembly in 10 days.
The $25 billion, seven-point plan would allocate $1 billion to higher education, including $180 million to the University for different projects such as Lincoln Hall renovations and a building to house the petascale supercomputer.

Metra: Two Chicago train derailments not related; foul play ruled out
10:28 PM 10/3/2007 — CHICAGO - The derailment of two Metra commuter trains along the same line were accidents and just a bizarre coincidence likely caused by track problems, authorities said Wednesday.
The FBI had looked into Tuesday night's derailments, which happened within 90 minutes of each other, to make sure there was no connection to suspected sabotage along the same line last week.

8:12 PM 10/3/2007 — LONDON - Super spicy chili sauce sparked road closures and evacuations in central London after passers-by complained that a chemical emanating from a Thai restaurant was burning their throats, police said Wednesday. Reports of a strong smell wafting from a restaurant in the heart of London's bustling Soho district Monday prompted the London Fire Brigade to send a chemical response team, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

According to a police report, the offender was stopped for a traffic violation and found to be operating an uninsured vehicle, having no registration and driving without lights.
