Unity march tackles issues Saturday
9:08 PM 10/13/2007 — Students and Champaign-Urbana residents equipped with signs and megaphones took to the streets Saturday afternoon in an effort to raise awareness about important community issues as a part of the fourth annual Unity March.
Increasing police accountability, protecting Section 8 voucher holders and restoring the general assistance fund were among these key issues said Brian Dolinar, who helped organize the event.

Pink Fighting Illini shirts flying off shelves

"The response has been overwhelming," said Cory Shumard, manager of GameDay Sports, 519 E. Green St. "It's almost creating a Final Four atmosphere."
Shumard predicts that all of the pink shirts at GameDay Sports will be gone by 4 p.

These pumpkins, among other varieties, experienced a normal growing season in central Illinois, however crops in the state's northern and southern regions had more problems.

12:01 AM 10/13/2007 — CARBONDALE, Ill. - The 1984 doctoral dissertation of Southern Illinois University's president included "inadvertent or unintended" plagiarism that can be easily remedied without costing him his job, a review panel said Thursday.
Glenn Poshard, at times choking back tears, welcomed the findings by the seven-member panel as the resolution of plagiarism claims that have dogged him for weeks, and prompted unsuccessful calls by some for his ouster.

Odds and ends: 'Welcome to Malone' sign in N.Y. shows Vermont farm
1:05 AM 10/12/2007 — MALONE, N.Y. - A graphic goof on signs welcoming travelers has this upstate community facing an identity crisis. That's because the "Welcome to Malone" signs feature an image of the New England countryside, not northern New York. Town supervisor Howard Maneely said a Vermont resident who was passing through happened to recognize the Green Mountain State's scenery on the signs and alerted Malone officials.

Police report
12:56 AM 10/12/2007 — Champaign Menards, 620 W. Town Center Blvd., reported burglary Tuesday. According to a police report, two unknown offenders entered the store's lumber yard and took a spool of copper wire. The offenders also damaged the business' chain link fence. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
