Emergency system ready for use
11:21 PM 10/17/2007 — The Emergency Text Message Notification System is fully operational as of Wednesday. Although tests are still being done on the number of messages that can be sent at a given time, the system is ready for use.
When activated, the system will go though each student and staff member according to University identification number and send a message to all outlets specified by the recipient.

Rod Blagojevich's veto of a bill that requires Illinois public schools to observe a moment of silence at the start of every school day. Student senate discusses stereotype party fallout

This resolution calls this event detrimental to the mission of the University and declares that the senate will aid the vice chancellor of student affairs, cultural houses and various multicultural organizations in facilitating discussion about it.

Bush honors Dalai Lama with congressional medal
11:11 PM 10/17/2007 — WASHINGTON - President Bush, raising Beijing's ire, presented the Dalai Lama on Wednesday with the U.S. Congress' highest civilian honor and urged Chinese leaders to welcome the monk to Beijing. The exiled spiritual head of Tibet's Buddhists by his side, Bush praised a man he called a "universal symbol of peace and tolerance, a shepherd of the faithful and a keeper of the flame for his people.

11:17 PM 10/17/2007 — CHICAGO - When Tom Linblade began canoeing the Fox River in Chicago's western suburbs decades ago, he knew what to expect come midsummer. When the weather was hot and the water slow, the river would turn pea-soup green and smell "pretty nasty."
Today, Linblade, 64, of Rockford, still paddles the Fox River about two or three times a year and has seen a "tremendous change" for the better in the water quality.

Blinding Calif. sandstorms cause highway wrecks, killing at least 4 people
2:55 PM 10/18/2007 — LANCASTER, Calif. - Wind advisories were extended Wednesday following blinding sandstorms that helped trigger several car pileups north of Los Angeles that killed at least four people and injured dozens of others, authorities said.
The sandstorms struck Tuesday as wind gusted to 55 mph in the arid high desert .
