C-U schools offer healthier foods

Public health officials believe schools still need to make more improvements to create healthier environments for students.

Children's home gets funds from student-run foundation
9:55 PM 10/29/2007 — The University athletic community renewed its ties to an Urbana facility for special-needs youth after the Orange Krush Foundation agreed to back construction efforts earlier this month.
The foundation will donate $50,000 over five years to Cunningham Children's Home, said Orange Krush President Eric Benz, senior in LAS.

Patients unaware of drugs
9:43 PM 10/29/2007 — Emily Hernandez, senior in LAS, went to McKinley Health Center last week to resolve what she believed were flu-like symptoms. A McKinley physician told her that she had a virus and needed rest and fluids. After her symptoms worsened, Hernandez returned to McKinley on Wednesday with a severe pain on her left side.

Police arrest man in connection with 2006 Champaign double murder
10:11 PM 10/29/2007 — Champaign police arrested a 35-year-old man over the weekend in connection with the double murder of Jerry and Sue Haigh.
Kenneth Sean Kelly was arrested Sunday on two counts of first-degree murder, according to a press release from the Champaign Police Department.

10:07 PM 10/29/2007 — CHICAGO - At Sullivan High School on the city's North Side, 479 students - the majority of them minority and low-income - enrolled in the class of 2006. By senior year, just 82 of them remained in school.
At East St. Louis Senior High School, a robust class of 777 students enrolled in the class of '06.

Judge upholds "moment of silence" law
9:46 PM 10/29/2007 — CHICAGO - A federal judge refused Monday to stop a suburban school district from observing a moment of silence required by a new state law, but allowed a lawsuit aimed ending the practice to move forward.
Judge Robert W. Gettleman declined to issue a temporary restraining order barring school District 214 and Buffalo Grove High School from holding the moment of silence.

8:08 PM 10/29/2007 — CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - A competitive eater who has already triumphed at a famous hot dog eating contest swallowed 103 small hamburgers in 8 minutes Sunday to take home $10,000. Joey Chestnut, 23, of San Jose, Calif., surpassed the previous record of 97 Krystal burgers - 2 1/2 inches square - held by Japan's Takeru Kobayashi, set at last year's Krystal Square Off.

8:11 PM 10/29/2007 — Champaign A 22-year-old man reported criminal damage to property at the 00 block of John Street, Sunday afternoon. According to a police report, an unknown offender threw a rock through the victim's windshield and scratched the hood of the vehicle. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
